Outboard Motor Dilemma......Advice from OB engine gurus needed...

So me and the wife basically got a hand me down boat from some relatives due to a death in the family.
17 ft aluminum bass boat, 1999 model with a 40hp merc on the back.
put about 300 in it up to this point, recently took it to the mechanic to get some slack taken out of the linkage in the lower unit (prop wouldn't go into reverse all the time)
well that is fixed and the motor is running now.......BUT, ole boy that fixed the linkage issue said he can hear a knock in the block of the motor and feels that it will throw a rod with 2 hours of running time on the water
he has offered to change all the bearings/guts out of the block for 1200 (seems about the going price to rebuild a block)
at this point, i'd just assume run it till it pops and just buy a decent used motor seems like 40-50hp used motors are running around the 2k range
(we're trying to buy furniture for the new house right now and 1200 bucks is something i just don't have laying around, thus why i'm more inclined to run motor and when it pops then worry about it)
Advice appreciated

I think you answered your own question, but don't forget to have your phone and a friends number with a boat for when that engine blows.

he could run doubs until then, then just drop the broken one.

Your boy is a fortune teller.... I've ran an outboard with a knock and dead cylinder for over a year. Make sure the carbs are clean and run a little extra oil in the gas....
Most older outboard with hours on them "tick", some even have a small knock. Roller bearing engines can make some weird noises and still be fine.

You could put oil in the gas. That engine is injectin oil at a 50:1 ratio. You could add 1/2oz per gallon of fuel and get you to around 42:1. Or you could switch to and Amzoil or a high performance synthetic bean oil.... then it would smell like a race engine

Take oil injection off, mix gas. Got a knock already, if injection runs lean you're going to through rod. You already have cards stacked against you running a merc, best thing to do is start removing as much OEM parts as possible.

It's a 40HP, he's probably running a 6 Gal. tank.... NOT a terrible idea... Oil injection systems fail often
