In its latest tally, the World Trade Center Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital counts 1,655 responders with cancer among the 37,000 cops, hard hats, sanitation workers, other city employees and volunteers it monitors, officials told The Post.

The tragic sum rises to 2,518 when firefighters and EMTs are added. The FDNY, which has its own WTC health program, said Friday it counts 863 members with cancers certified for 9/11-related treatment.

Sucks, but that's what happens when two 100 story buildings come down.

Is there a comparison between the average civilian and then perhaps, compared to a national baseline for first responders?

Hmmm...

I'm curious what compounds are causing this.

I don't know the % of cancer in the general pop but is 1,655 of 37,000 a much higher rate?

Ya, I see a number after googling that 40.8%(Good lord if accurate) of men and women will be diagnosed for all cancers.

Of course there may be a spike in specific cancers at Ground Zero.

Like to see numbers.

Yep, that's pretty accurate. However, you're talking 4 out of 10 people will be diagnosed with cancer, in their lifetime. This includes non fatal skin cancers like basal cell and squamous cell, which are the most common.

I'd be more interested in the occurrence rate of a specific type of cancer among the 9/11 responders.

Also firefighters in general have a much higher rate of cancer than the general population.

1655/37000 doesn't seem like an outrageous number being that a lot of the population will get cancer.

Now if this is a specific type caused by something that can be pinpointed to the site, then that is different.

I thought I remember hearing at one point that cement dust could cause cancer

I think I read that it's actually a lower percentage than the general population.

Plaintiff's attorneys are scrambling as we speak to line up clients and figure out who to name as defendants. I assume the terrorist weren't insured, so where does that leave us? United Airlines? The building contractors? Material manufacturers? Surely it was foreseeable that foreign terrorist could hijack to planes and fly them in to buildings, right?

I only wish this thought was outlandish as it sounds

I believe cement dust definitely contributed to my two bouts with Lymphoma. I worked as a commercial sales rep for a large ready mix company for 12 years and inhaled a ton of that stuff while helping do QC on large pours for my biggest customers. Standing at the top of the ladder with a flashlight peering into the drum to monitor slumps,etc..

I think mine was a case of genetic pre-disposition to get some kind of cancer due to my mothers family coupled with all that cement dust creating a perfect storm.
