This is odd to me, for I always picture your typical southerner as someone who is very frugal and prudent with money.

Have you seen Skoal and Copenhagen prices lately?

Not really surprising.
I would guess a very large percentage of this debt is medical debt. And seeing as this map is very similar to a map of states with the most uninsured people, it makes sense to see debt with a similar geography and demographic.

Some people don't believe in paying their bills, even if they have the money.

bad decision making doesn't exist in one sphere, so these correlations are not shocking (and should also lead to a dissolving of the 'causation' argument re: government services)

Yep. Well said.

Stupid is everywhere.
But there are southerners...and people who just live in the south.

I bet the payday loan usage map would look exactly like that too

As I said in the OT thread, the data from this study is pure garbage. They included parking tickets and photo traffic tickets that were "sent to collections".
As many other threads have hashed this out, many people are legally correct in their non-payment of these items.
I bet you alot of the "debt" heavy states have photo traffic programs.

There are some other maps that will look very similar to that, which could illuminate the issue here.

Insincere fiscal conservatism does play a part as well.

Going into debt means you're spending more money now. Perhaps you're getting compensated less than your northern counterparts in exchange for your labor and need to augment your salary with debt. Either way it helps create jobs. That's all that matters.

I would like to see a breakdown by education level and "party affiliation."

Really? You should post a few.

you seem to be implying that you believe southerners, as a group, or more fiscally prudent/frugal than folks in other areas, such as the midwest or the northeast ... i'm not sure why you or anyone else would think that, if true ...

I'm willing to bet that map looks a lot like a minority density map. It probably also has a high correlation to the map of rim financing originations.
Just saying.
Just saying.
