They are both takes, in the end, you have to improve your roster. We had too much dead weight on the roster this last season.
Next year, same people would be calling Brandon Sampson dead weight. Not ready. Remember that when thinking about this years' "dead weight" ...

LSU isn't getting Malik, I don't think.

The fact is Sampson is a great prospect and we shouldn't pass over him if he wants to come here.
We had 11 scholarship guys on the team this year and only 6 got more than 7 minutes a game. Of the 3 guys who averaged 6-7 minutes a game only 1 played more than half the games this season. Clearly there is big room for improvement at the bottom end of the roster. We need to build a roster capable that we can comfortably play 9 or 10 guys so we can run exactly what JJ wants to run.
I am not saying all 5 guys who rarely played this year are all dead weight, but there is certainly a guy or two if it came down to it Sampson would be worth taking over...and I'm not sure how you could disagree. Yes 4 of the 5 guys who rarely played were young, but that doesn't mean all 4 will develop into good players. Some will and some will still be dead weight. That's up to JJ to decide and he's had to do it multiple times before (Corban Collins, Shane Hammink, Malik Morgan, Jalen Courtney).

We should see a increase in that number. I expect atleast 1 of epps or ER3 to turn the corner and then we are pretty much replacing Odo's roster spot with tone

Let me expand on this by putting together a potential roster for you:
1. SR. Gray
2. SR. Hornsby
3. JR. Mickey
4. JR. Quarterman
5. JR. Bridgewater
6. JR. Malone
7. SO. Patterson
8. SO. Victor
9. SO. Epps
10. SO. Robinson III
11. FR. Simmons
12. FR. Blakeney
13. FR. Newman
14. FR. Sampson
Mickey leaving makes this easy, but lets say he returns, we get Newman and Sampson says I want LSU. Do you tell Sampson no or do you send someone else packing?

You send Malone packing or tell Hornsby's dad to pony up, he's got money

I tell Sampson no. I don't think he's a clear upgrade over anyone we've already got that's go time in the program. On the downside to that though is that we're going to be in a hole long term for shooting guards.

That's my problem. We will have two guards who are seniors and two freshman who are likely 1 and done's... That means we HOPEFULLY have Quarterman back, who could probably go pro after that year if he plays well next year. That is a scary situation where LSU would lose all but Patterson after next season.

I think we all already know the season after next is going to be a step back. Hopefully they can put enough long term pieces in that class that will be freshmen that can grow together so the hiccup is only one season.

No sense in thinking like that right now...so much can (and will) change by the time we fully address this. And also keep in mind, we only face this extreme scenario if the team is playing up to their potential...so as a result recruitnig should be a little easier for us, as if this staff needs any assistance in that department
I think we will be just fine and gucci as we move forward.

Seriously? The #52 overall prospect might not be a clear upgrade over guys who could barely play this year? Once again, don't get me wrong, nothing is sure fire and 4 of the 5 guys who rarely played this year WERE young...but at this point I think we know exactly what we're getting with 1 maybe 2 of those young guys...and the other ones are definitely huge projects (who could very well hit big like Quarterman from year 1 to year 2).
Also, as others have said, we might as well get good guards while we can, because we stand to lose just about everyone after next season, and Sampson is no 1 and done threat.

Good point. If we do we well enough for all those guys to leave early, it's going to be a really fun year.

At the position he plays, no he isn't a clear upgrade over guys we've already got in the program or signed.
Guard depth this past year and this upcoming year are not the issue.
The raw players or underdeveloped players are all in the front court. Unless we're switching to a 4 guard offense, Sampson doesn't help that.

2 of our guards are 100% gone after next season, it could be as bad as 3, 4 or hell even 5 guards all leaving at once after next year, you have to think about the future.

It's a huge issue after next season.

So you think we need to play a 4 guard offense if we got rid of a tall guy for Sampson? That makes no sense.

You are arguing this point as if I didn't acknowledge that in my original post. You conveniently didn't quote it, but it was there.

As I've already acknowledged. Read my post again.

If we keep adding guards and losing front court guys, we won't have a choice.

This is a single case scenario, I'm not sure where you're getting at doing this over and over and over.
If Mickey returns we have SEVEN big men between him, Victor, Malone, Robinson, Simmons, Epps and Bridgewater. You think we have to switch to a 4-guard offense with SIX big men on the roster? Come on man, think.

Bridge is only guy I sacrifice for Sampson. Better off letting him fail early elsewhere and transfer back to LSU after.

Simmons/Epps can and will play some 3. Victor 4/5, Malone 5, Mickey 4/5 E 5 Bridge... 4?

Coach, how do you feel about Malik? Hearing good things?

Honestly didn't ask anyone in Jackson this weekend. Just enjoyed some basketball and talked with Louisiana people. I figure what the public knows they'll know. He'll announce in next couple weeks, not big on the day to day flip flopping like some. Leave that to the "crystal ball" watchers. Those fools just change every day or two to say they were right at one point.
