@AdamSchefter: Patriots claimed former Panthers rookie RB Tyler Gaffney on waivers today after Carolina tried to sneak him through waivers and into IR.

You can't just place a guy in IR?

Apparently have to keep him on the roster all the way through camp and put him on IR after he makes the 53-man roster. If you place him on IR now, you have to waive him.

Panthers lost Gaffney and the $96k signing bonus they paid him.

Patriots broke an "unwritten" rule according to some of the media reports on this type of situation. Looks like the Patriots did the same thing a few years ago with Jake Ballard from the Giants.

That's why you wait to cut them (when its mandatory) if you're high on them.

Amazing that there is an 18-page threadon that site discussing the Panthers losing Gaffney. Pretty absurd.

And now the Pats have to do that. That's their decision. Panthers didn't want him bad enough to do that, tough titties.

That's the same shite they pulled when Ballard was claimed. Bill was just like "what unwritten rule, who gives a shite?"

Reading that thread, I had no clue how many panther fans were still so bitter about that 2003 Super Bowl

not sure how relaible. most resuilts dealt with fantasy football

If no team claims the player, he becomes a free agent and is able to sign with any team. If another team does claim him, his original team has the right to pull him off waivers and keep him on the roster. So, to demote a player to the practice squad, a team must put him on waivers, then hope that he clears waivers, and then sign him to a practice-squad contract.
