Also, those roots follow a similar pattern to the bricks what some drainages have to follow due to rocks.

See rectangular drainage pattern



It's interesting to see it on a small scale in a different form/class of matter.

I once read a paper about how the pinnules and arms on the crown of a crinoid (ancient starfish relative) is efficient for getting food that's trapped from the water to the pinnules, down the arms, to mouth at the center of the crown.


They said this also explains the layout and efficiency of a banana plantation.

The paper was about Crinoids and Banana Plantations.

Not impressed. All of those are brick or concrete pavers.

Let's see how the trees would fare against a monolithic slab. It wouldn't look like that.
