My father in law in not tech savy at all. The man doesn't even have a smart phone so we need to try and avoid windows 8.

This needs to be mobile because he wants to take it to his hunting farms and use it to store pictures and keep spreadsheets for the land of when he cuts, feeds, etc...

He also needs it to read his SD card from his camera.

My mother in law asked if a Chrome book could do all this since they are cheap. I don't know anything about those. Any ideas?

Chromebook = spy book

How tech savy are you?

Just bought my kid a used Lenovo T500 on eBay for $80 bucks. Dual core 2.54 ghz CPU with 4 gig ram and 150gb hard drive and a 15 inch screen. Swapped the drive out for a 500gb drive that I bought for $90 and it works like a champ.

Only reason I got the 500gb drive is because he needed the space for games

Don't bother with a chromebook if he's a non tech-savvy windows user. Even though it would do what he needs it to do, he'll probably end up frustrated by its limitations and not being able to do the things in the same manner to which he is accustomed. Plus, I don't know what his internet situation is like at these hunting farms, but the cheap chrome books only have about 16-32gb of internal storage. They are heavily reliant on internet connectivity for storage/productivity, which means teaching him about google drive and/or other cloud solutions. He might appreciate a laptop that can do everything he needs to do with or without internet.

He needs to get a $300 laptop and the cheapest 2.5" 250gb ssd available. Swap out his hard drive with the ssd and install windows and the laptop drivers on it. I know you know how to do that.

I'm not sure but I bet he can barely use Windows either. He is an old fashioned country redneck.

He won't have any internet out at the hunting camp. Why do you think he needs the SSD? I know why I love mine but why him?

Just in case he has poor browsing habits, it won't run like shite in 6 months from clutter and 1000 startup programs/services. It'll be faster than he's ever seen. Other than that, I wouldn't say its "necessary." Sounds like he just needs the cheapest of cheap laptops that has enough storage that he won't have to worry about that newfangled cloud bullshite.

I think so too, most of them just have Windows 8 on them now. I haven't actually looked too much myself yet, my mother in law just called me last night asking about it.
