Hard to understand why they are so expensive for this week. Cheapest thing I can find is about $100 a day for a regular car.

Take Uber to a rental location away from the airport and you will find a car for less than $50 per day.

You get raped at the airport.

That's about what I paid on some random Tuesday at DIA a while back.

Everything associated with Denver's airport is a shitshow.

You're doing ok then. Was renting a car for vacation last month and the cheapest I found on Kayak was $110 for a Ford Escort. I'm 6'5" so that idea was squashed pretty quick.

Priceline "name your price" was a bust also.

Luckily a few days before the trip, a deal on Orbitz got me a mid-sized SUV for $85 per day. Gladly jumped on it.

It's expensive to rent a car in Denver. Also, avoid the smaller companies like Fox Rental and Advanced. They get horrible reviews. We luckily got our deal from Enterprise and it was pretty darned smooth.

Good luck.

So this Uber thing, looks like you're a fan. Heading up into the mountains, not sure if the uber car will hang around with me for 4 days.

How many times a day will you be using the car? 3 or 4? If so, Uber makes much more sense than renting a car.

Maybe you don't get the deals until you get the weekly rate, but I'm finding a minivan (kids coming) for the week of thanksgiving for $475 base rate for a week. The august rates are going to about that for a mid size for only 4 days.

eta, I got the minivan reservation through national, just searched their direct site for the August dates, it simply said "Sold Out", before I even had a chance to look at options.

That is about what a rental costs when we were there earlier this year. We opted for a shuttle and yellow cab instead

"Escort"?!?!

That has not been in production in over 11 years. You meant Ford Focus which actually would have been fine for someone your size believe it or not.

The past two January's, my friends and I rented full-size four-wheel-drive SUVs (Yukon) for less than $100

That does sound high. You've tried kayak I presume?

I've tried orbitz and expedia, I'll give kayak a go. But I put the same days, but a month later in orbitz, and the rates were less than half of the august dates. Weird.
