She said she supports Common Core standards because "test results have shown they are working. We're teaching children critical thinking like never before" and "preparing them for jobs that don't exist yet."

How does she know she's preparing them for jobs that don't exist? Glad she's teaching the lovely children.

Just saw her on the news speaking on the court steps. I shook my head.

Although she may have explained more fully, she is making a valid point. But you guys have fun.

Most of the objections to Common Core seem to have become completely irrational at this point. Or at least unrelated to its actual merits.

the idea is that the kids are learning "critical thinking" skills -- learning how to process information for relevancy in unplanned situations and learning to apply that information logically and competently to get a desired conclusion

it should be obvious that this prepares them for jobs that don't yet exist, because if you can do those things then you're easier to train as an employee and better equipped to go back to school in the future (if needed) to get specific technical skills

you can argue that CC doesn't really teach these skills well (from what I've heard, I don't think it does), but acting like the "jobs that don't exist yet" quote is dumb is just asinine. it makes perfect sense if you understand what critical thinking is

Thank you. Saved me time and keystrokes.

My understanding is that it may need some tweaking and improvement, but it's an effort in the right direction.

"Critical thinking" sounds fancy. I'm glad the ignorant masses/teachers are getting in line.

I've never heard people so up in arms over curriculum, and I doubt most of the rabble rousers could even describe the structure of their children's current curriculum. However, I think you can have an opinion that is rational, has nothing to do with the curriculums merits and it can still be a valid point.

From what I understand, the federal government is looking to provide cash tied to adoption of and performance related to this curriculum. That for a lot of people is enough to oppose it...rationally.

I think it was a critical mistake to get into bed with the Feds on this.

I'd like to caveat by saying I need to do much much more research on the topic.

Can you tell me when Ms.Dumas started using CC? And where can I read about this proven results, Frankly I don't think they exist. But just because I couldn't easily fine them after a quick google doesn't mean they're not to be found.
