After posting in the top five movie thread this morning, I knew The Deer Hunter was on the brink, and it's a tossup in my top 5-10.

The film is depressing as hell, but it's one of the few that actually gives me feels. It's slow at times, but has a ton of great moment's.

What does the board have to say about The Deer Hunter?

Won't change my opinion will always be in my top 5-10.

Yep. It's long haven't watched it in two years, but frick if that opening scene with the guys saying bye to everyone in the steel mill before going off to Vietnam isn't awesome, then what is?

The wedding scene could have been pared down by an hour or so

I don't think the same way, I'm not disagreeing with you. However, I believe the wedding scene was necessary to set up the pride & comradery of the Orthodox in the outskirts of Pittsburgh? Not exactly sure which major Pensylvania city it was.

Probably the same one as All the Right Moves because Tom Cruise had a Greek name in that one.

Maybe they could have just given everyone Greek names and shaved an hour?

Long, slow, and depressing.

In my opinion the scene in the POW camp is one of the most memorable scenes I've ever seen. Also the ending where they sing "God Bless America" was very well done. Such a difficult time for the country.

The acting is spectacular. The direction is inconsistent, as is the pace. The story has some holes and frankly it hasn't aged well - from a visual standpoint.

I still think of it as a great film, but it does not make my "best of" lists - other than, "best collection of talent on one screen."

I can't get into this movie for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad.

I might have to give it another watch.

Not my favorite Vietnam movie but probably the best at making you hate everything about that war.

Great acting, amazing cast

one of the most overrated movies of all time

it lives off of one brilliant scene (the Russian roulette scene)
