RDJ is the Highest Paid Actor in Hollywood This Year And Hasn't Worked

What a freaking boss
I'd make any number of "shitty" sequels to get paid like that.
quote:
Forget the Iron Man suit: Robert Downey Jr.’s real superpower is making money. For the second year in a row, the actor has ranked no. 1 on Forbes’ list of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. His earnings from June 2013 to June 2014 totaled approximately $75 million, exactly the same income that put him on the top of the 2013 list. Here’s the amazing part: He made the identical amount of money this year without starring in any movies.
How is that possible? Last year, he made Iron Man 3; this year, audiences can see him play a tiny role in his buddy Jon Favreau’s indie film Chef, and maybe — just maybe — in a quick cameo as Tony Stark in Guardians of the Galaxy. Not surprisingly, that $75 million payday isn’t coming from either of those films. Rather, it’s still coming from Iron Man 3, one of the highest-grossing movies of 2013. Because Downey Jr. was paid on the back end from the movie’s $1.2 billion revenue, the money just kept rolling in. Contrast that with the list’s no. 2 Dwayne Johnson (at an estimated $52 million) who had Pain & Gain and Fast & Furious 6 last year, and Hercules coming July 25.
I'd make any number of "shitty" sequels to get paid like that.

Agreed. People could talk shite about my movies all they want. I'd just laugh as I rolled around in my mountains of cash.

i cant believe Iron Man is so popular

I think RDJ deserves a lot of the credit for it being so popular

That's disgusting.
But awesome.

If I was a fairly bankable actor, I'd have most of my salaries drawn up to be based on back end gross figures. It's one reason people like Will Smith and Jim Carrey are made of money at this point.
shite, Jack Nicholson is prolly still raking in the Batman checks.

If I was a fairly bankable actor,
and even the actors who ARE bankable, seeing that gauranteed 20 mil check is "safer" than the potential to earn 50 mil+

Yeah but RDJ was in a unique situation where not only is he a bankable actor, but the character in and of itself is bankable and he had become synonymous with the character. Let's face it, Marvel wasn't going to replace RDJ as Iron Man for the Avengers. They just weren't. He was and is the most recognizable actor in the cast with the most recognizable character thanks to the original Iron Man and the sequels. If they replaced RDJ as Iron Man, they'd probably have to reboot the whole damn franchise.
Point being, he was in a rather unique situation of power with the studio and it was pretty well assured that Iron Man 3 was going to bring in tons of dollars, even if it was a shite show.

Sure, but someone like Will Smith, for example...his movies make BANK, almost no matter what (I mean shite, After Earth made almost $250 million worldwide). Every movie I'd do if I were him would have my contract tied to the gross (not net obviously because of Hollywood Accounting).
People like Sam Jackson and Gary Oldman should do it as well...not so much because they're bankable on their own, but the movies they are in make boatloads of cash.

Me too. Although there is a small difference with Sandler though, in that it's his own company that is putting the movies out, right? So obviously he has more control and can thus get a bigger piece of the pie.
I remember getting into it with OML (he fricking HATES AS) one day on here about Sandler...he was so pissed that Sandler's movies have big budgets, but part of that is so he can pay his friends lots of money. Not sure how you can hate on him for that, especially when almost all of his movies make hundreds of millions of dollars. He's as bankable as they come most of the time.

No shite. Churn and burn, man. Particularly if he's having a good time doing it.
Some actors may get caught up in the whole "I need to stretch myself" mentality, and that's great. It gives us something to marvel at on screen. Others just do what they do and are content with that. If I'm Sandler, I'm making these silly movies with my friends, banking a few million and then doing something a bit more adventurous, but he just wants to do the former and then chill out with his kids and I can't fault him for that.

Sandler gets total respect from me for getting to a point in his life when he can get a studio to send he and his friends on vacation for a couple of months.
I don't pay to watch his films though.

i never judge someone for making money like AS does.
But I can still feel like my intelligence is being insulted everytime I see his movie trailers run every 30 minutes on tv

Exactly.

And that's fine. But a fricking LOT of people do. So he's making those same studios plenty of money. It's not like he's just dicking around and losing money for people...if that were the case, he'd stop getting money for movies. In the same vein as After Earth...Jack and Jill (pretty universally hated) made $150 million at the box office. Jack and fricking Jill.
Grown Ups (hated by most), $271 million
Just Go With It, $215 million
Hotel Transylvania, $358 million
Grown Ups 2, $247 million
Bedtime Stories, $213 million
You Don't Mess With Zohan, $200 million
Chuck and Larry, $186 million
Click, $238 million
Even his latest, Blended, is over $100 million at this point, and is still in theaters.
Say what you want, but dude makes bank at the box office, so he can make whatever movies he wants and get his friends big paychecks all he wants in my book. It's not like he's not worth the price tag.

Super hero movies can break you as an actor, Affleck is about to find that out. Downey is just fortunate Iron Man and the Avengers were handled the way they are being handled to make the franchise so successful.
When is another Sherlock Holmes coming out?

I have zero respect for someone who continues to make garbage. If people like him, that's fine. Personally, I'd rather get the flu than watch an Adam Sandler movie. They make me just as sick.

People like to dump on Americans for their viewing interests, but it's other countries going to see M. Night's movies.

I can't hate on a smart business man. He knows what his audience likes and capitalizes on it. For the most part I also find his movies garbage (I think last one I liked was Just Go With It) but obviously there is a market for what he does and he does that genre well.
Same with Tyler Perry.
Also I liked seeing Dwayne Johnson #2 on that list, seems like a good dude.
