My brother passed away and left me a R61 9mm but the ammunition is different (I think) I don't know much about guns. One says 380 ACP Wolf the other 380 AUTO what is the difference besides the name?

.380 ACP and .380 auto are the same round. Both entirely different than 9mm

It takes 9x18mm Makarov (old Soviet round), same thing as 9x19mm Parabellum.

Do NOT put a .380 through it even though it'll cycle the round.

I'd get a second opinion but I think I'm right on this one.

Check the markings on the barrel itself. Some of them were imported with .380 barrels.

.380 would be wider, no?

For example, a .380 could fire 9mm short but a 9mm short can't fire a .380.

Kinda along the lines of 7.62 and .308 Win?

The 9mm Mak and .380 have slightly different dimensions. The mak is a tad longer and bigger. A .380 round will go bang in a 9mm Mak but it's not good for the gun. A 9mm Mak firing through a 380 barrel is potentially dangerous.

Got it. Well since he doesn't know which one he's got and I'm guessing it came with .380. Shouldn't he take it to a gunsmith to find out which one it as and if it's been fubared by shooting the wrong ammo through it before firing it?

.380 is just a shorter 9mm IIRC which is why it was first called 9mm Kurz(sp) or something like that. If it is a 9mm use 9mm, if it is a .380 use .380.

No it's not. The parabellum will eventually destroy that gun.
