Place your bets: training camp dark horse and surprise cut?

Dark horse: George Uko.
Everyone on the d-line from last year has returned except for Tom Johnson, who signed with the Vikings, so if we carry the same amount of linemen again, there's a roster spot open.
George Uko has a quick burst and is disruptive, but he needs to work on his technique. He reminds me a lot of Tryunn Walker.
Surprise Cut: Ronald Powell.
This one is harder, because I honestly don't think they'll be a lot of surprises. I think Powell takes the path of Rufus Johnson and spends the year on the PS. Powell is athletically gifted, but missed significant time in college. I don't think he's developed enough to make the active roster.

Uko, maybe, but i think our DL is pretty set. You have Glenn Foster coming back too.
Dark horse: Seantavious Jones at WR.
Cuts: Robert Meachem, Brandon Coleman

Are we only talking rookies?
Dark Horse: Ramon Humber
Surprise Cut: Logan Kilgore
Maybe not a surprise.

Exactly. The only one who left from last year was Johnson, and I think we carry the same amount of d-linemen.

Would only be a surprise to message boards. I don't have any hope in this guy making the roster. Practice Squad at best.

I don't think so. Has a 3 year deal, plus, the Saints are thin at Safety depth. I think he is almost a lock.

Dark horse: Tim Flanders. This is tricky but you did ask for dark horse, which I interpret as a plausible long shot. I know it's unlikely because there's no way we could keep six RBs and I highly doubt that he's going to steal a roster slot from PT, Ingram, Khiry, Cadet or FB Erik Long. But I said the same thing about Khiry and Cadet last year and look where they are today. So Flanders could very well make the PS and work his way up from there.
Surprise cut: Joe Morgan or Nick Toon. If Cooks and Stills continue to develop, Morgan is replaceable (especially if he is slow to recover from his injury). If Toon doesn't show real progress by the end of camp, he could be shown the door instead of Morgan. With the Saints likely keeping at least 6 CBs and possibly 5 safeties for Ryan's crazy secondary packages, the Saints are going to have to make some sacrifices somewhere. It's conceivable for CSP to run with just 5 active WRs, considering the amount of passes that go to Graham and the running back position.

Just curious, what's so "dark horse" about a guy who started 3 games for the Saints last season?
Dark horse: Tim Flanders
Suprise Cut: Shayne Graham

Good one. They will keep him or the Tulane guy.

I wouldn't be surprised. I think that Dimke kid was kicking well in OTAs.

This is his first NFL contract though. 3 years is standard for a rookie. The guaranteed money is probably very low.

No way. They would at least try to get a late rounder in a trade for him during preseason. Kid has some talent and he's not completely green, and I guarantee there will be some team (like the Cards this year) who are desperate for someone to run the ball.

He has no real regular season experience. Hardly worth a draft pick.. Maybe a 7th rounder if it's a really desperate team. Totally different from the Ivory situation where he had done real things in live game situations.
I just don't see it with him. And even if I did, it wouldn't matter. He's buried on the depth chart. Too much talent at other positions to keep guys who will really never have a chance to play.
The only way he could be an impact guy who is worth a spot is if he stands out in KR game.

I don't think he's buried on the depth chart. He's the only one with any real professional KR experience, that counts for something. We kept Roby on the roster for how long? Just to be a KR guy for the majority of his career. Since we'll probably lose Ingram after this year, I doubt they'll be willing to let him go so easily. Also, he is the most transition-able RB that we have into Sproles' role.
Also we never know what can happen in camp, you could be deep at one spot, have a stupid injury where Ingram gets payback from Butler, and he's out for the season. I hope not, just saying - running back is the newest, most under-appreciated position until you don't have a running back. 2010 anyone? Didn't we bring some guy from FA for that Seattle game where the last experience he had was playing for Florida?
