What makes one bar popular and another not?

never really got what made one bar popular in college and another not.
they all had drink specials, they all played the same music, all dirty crap holes.
what draws/drew you to one over another?
Saw that "Bogies" is 20 years old......that place was like 10 different places that all went out of business....what made the bogie's concept that much more appealing over "someplace else" (I think the first incarnation in that establishment)?

Cater to the females and the guys will follow. Keep the women feeling comfortable and they'll stay longer and come back, have great martini and drink specials and a bar staff that knows how to smile and keeps their head up always looking for someone needing a drink. Enforce 21 and up and no smoking inside. No pool tables. They bring the wrong crowd and take up space.
Oh and have a very clean women's bathroom
And last but not least know your margins and adjust to the clientele in your area

You have to know your market also. A bunch of young professionals don't want to go to a techno bar just like young kids don't want to go to a wine/scotch/cigar bar.

Any decent girls I hung out with did not.
I went to Bogie's because it is where the greeks usually went. They had a dress code that kept tatted up meatheads and thugs out for the most part. Had good drink specials as well, fun place.
Also you had to be 20 to get in rather than 18 (for guys) when I was in school. It was an attempt to keep the hothead idiots who like to fight out of the bar as well. Girls at 19 could get in I believe.

For seven Saturdays in the fall you pack that bitch with as many people as possible and make as much money as possible. For the rest of the year you try not to blow all the money you made just to stay afloat until next football season. That's how you have a successful bar in a college town
