quote:

The Astros‘ failure to sign Brady Aiken is baffling, MLB.com’s Richard Justice writes. The difference between the Astros’ final offer of $5MM and the $6.5MM to which the two parties initially agreed is tiny in terms of MLB talent. Meanwhile, another draft pick, Jacob Nix, saw his own deal disappear as the Astros lost the bonus pool allotment for the first overall pick. Justice also argues that it will take time for the Astros to repair the damage to their reputation the Aiken decision will cause.

quote:

“Nobody wins” in the Aiken/Astros snafu, Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet.ca writes. Nix, in particular, loses out through no fault of his own. Nicholson-Smith cites an agent who notes that the current system forces teams to prioritize balancing their draft budgets, even when that means they lose out on talent — because the Astros didn’t sign Aiken, they couldn’t sign Nix, even though Nix and the Astros had previously agreed to a deal.

quote:

Aiken advisor Casey Close ripped Astros GM Jeff Luhnow on the phone for leaking the results of Aiken’s physical, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman writes. Close also reportedly suggested that other teams dislike dealing with the Astros because of their approach in negotiations.

He may go Juco, get in draft next year and be drafted #2 by Astros. With #1 pick Astros will draft Mike Cameron's son. Win -win for Astros.

I wish someone would ask Boras to expand on the comment he made about the way Close handled the situation. But it isn't any fun for writers to speculate that side may have done something stupid.

Agree 100% msu. Nix is really the only victim here and it's due to the draft setup.

A free ride to UCLA is not a bad consolation prize for both.

Eta: and Marshall to LSU

They can't unless Aiken consents to it.

Aiken was offered 5 million and didn't counter. Don't feel bad for him. He's not a victim.

Wow. He and his family is dumb for turning that down

Their sticking point is the original argrement was 6.5m but Astros lowered it after their doctors looked at Aiken (only speculation on my part)

Still, when you get a chance to make $5 million, you should take it. Especially when your arm may be messed up

Just wait till Aiken and his family file a Hippa lawsuit against the stros. Plus, if he goes to juco next year and still rated high, I doubt he gives the Astros permission to draft him, so they want be able to draft him.

Astros refused to pay 6.5 for what they considered a damaged product.

#2 pick next year > Damaged product this year

But damaged product was still worth $5 mill and losing the #2 pick next year. Makes sense.

Stros thought Aiken agreed too easy and they could squeeze another 1.5 out for Marshall and it failed hard.

No, they thought damaged product + Nix + Marshall was worth $8 mill.

They didn't release his information and I'm guessing they won't exactly be chomping at the bit to redraft him either.

that's beyond idiotic

what's the point of being drafted #1 overall then?

they can set the slot at 9 mil, and whoever has the pick can just draft someone and offer them 5 million because it would be stupid not to take it, right?
