The networks aren't going to drop their OTA offerings. The cable and satellite providers may block convenient ways of accessing it through their devices, but you can always get it with a simple tuner. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I cut the cable just this week and get all the channels I need in perfect HD with a combination of OTA, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime for a fifth of what I was paying for satellite. I'm a happy camper.

If ESPN were to put everyone of their channels out there onto the Internet and charge a small subscription fee I would drop cable instantly.

I believe friends and family can share passwords for services like ESPN and Netflix. Of course, not suggesting you do anything illegal.

Yeah, they sorta have this with HBOGO. Some providers have a "lite" package and you can get HBOGO cheaper. ESPN should do this as well, but these big boys are scared of giving their channels away too cheap and having lots of people cut the chord.
