"Pocahontas"

This Disney flick, though highly entertaining, is a more than just a bit off from reality. In the movie, Pocahontas, a Native American, falls in love with a British settler. The film depicts them both as adults, but this is historically inaccurate as Pocahontas was barely a teen when she met John Smith.

quote:

"Good Morning, Vietnam"

This instant hit starring Robin Williams strays from reality so much that some don't even realize it claims to represent a true story. The story revolves around Adrian Cronauer a radio disc jockey who is an anti-war liberal that rants and raves about the Army.

quote:

"JFK"

When this film released, it did not take long for controversy surround it. The story focuses on one theory surrounding the president's death and follows an investigator as he works on the case.

quote:

"The Patriot"
This film starring Mel Gibson immediately received criticism for its stretching of the truth. It portrays British soldiers as monsters and in one scene; they lock men, women, and children up and set the building on fire.

quote:

"Braveheart"

This film, complied with his others, makes one wonder if Mel Gibson has a thing for starring in movies that inaccurately portray history. This film revolves around 13-century Scotland and its hero, William Wallace.

quote:

"Gladiator"

What is surprising about this historically inaccurate movie is that a historian helped work on it. In the movie, the character Maximus is fictional and several of the battles never even took place.

quote:

"Battle of the Bulge"

This movie, set in WWII, features an encounter between Allied forces and Germans during the Invasion of Normandy. Of course, the Allies were the victors, but the movie itself was full of inaccuracies and forgotten details.

I'd rather see a list of historically accurate movies. They're harder to find.

Everyone knows that Gladiator isn't a true story. They probably hired the historian to help make it look authentic. It's obviously a fictional character.

Yeah I just assume any movie based on historical events or real people is about 5% accurate at most. I don't care though, I watch movies to be entertained not to learn something.

That should be a good indicator that the movie will not be historically accurate.

that website is suspect as frick bro.

and so are their examples of facts

I'm not saying that the movies are historically accurate, but come on if you're going to write critical piece at least provide context and write with some semblence of a syntax that is appropriate for the subject matter.

Also slideshow's are suspect

I for one am relieved to see that 300 didn't make the list.

I can sleep easy now, knowing that the 300 Spartans on that day, truly shouted for entire conversations, eschewed functional honor in favor of homoerotic uniforms that showed off their abs, and jumped headlong into the persian army led by Dennis Rodman while doing karate moves--often in slow motion.

Wait a second. This fricking guy has seen the real assassination report and knows the inaccuracies of this movie?

You serious Clark? For one thing, it makes no sense. For another, Oliver Stone has totally admitted to pulling it out of his arse. He called it a "counter-myth" to all the myths out there.

I don't consider it lying. How can a fictional work lie?

If they called it a Documentary or FACT Based Biography, you can say they lied but otherwise, nope.

It's fracking fiction. It is what the Author says it is.

If you get your history from movies perhaps you need to be cleaned from the gene pool.

Next they will tell me this picture didn't really happen!

It was the Nazis that did British-like shite.

Let's keep the timeline correct, if anything.

How about the movie U-571?

Those types of operations actually happened out at sea but they were performed by the British, not the Americans.
