One of the originators of rock blues. Also produced some of Muddy Waters Grammy winning records.

He was a great player. I just recently watched a show of his from 2013 (dvd) and he was still able to play at age 69.

Damn.

How'd it happen? He's been playing pretty recently hasn't he?

He will be missed. I'm glad I saw him back in 2009 at Jazz Fest. He looked like he had one foot in the grave, but then he started playing and it was incredible. He came alive as long as the music was flowing. Once he stopped playing, he had to be helped to his feet and off the stage. It was as if he existed only to play the blues, and boy could he shred them.

He played hard on and off the stage for a long time. When he and Edgar first hit the music scene, people looked at them as a circus act because of their appearance but it didn't take long to realize Johnny was a world class musician on multiple instruments.

One of the Texas Greats!! He will be missed!

His last album was really good, if you haven't heard it.

My mom went to High School with him and my Uncle used to tell stories of riding bicycles with Johnny and Edgar late at night and getting yelled at when people saw them. RIP Johnny.

Let's face it, the Winter Brothers were easy to spot at night.

RIP, Johnny

RIP my man. I guess the hard living finally took its toll. Make no mistake, though, this guy was damned good and a legend on guitar. Edgar is not bad at what he does, but Johnny was in a class to himself. Wish I could have seen him live, but have plenty of albums to remember him by.

RIP

I was fortunate enough to see him a few years ago. Just tore it up. Thought he was going to keel over right there on stage but he was badass.

I guess he and his brother never reconciled their differences did they?

I thought they had. In fact, weren't they scheduled to do some gigs together this year?

ETA: Johnny and Edgar actually toured together last year. They played 20 venues just last summer. Edgar was happy his brother was part of it.
