Which do you prefer? I just bought a 16' Jon boat with a small center console towards the back of the boat.
Trying to decide if I want to put in a bigger cennter console further towards the front or just change it to a side console?

Thoughts?

In a 16' Jon boat, personally, I would go side console. I like center consoles, but they take up a lot of damn room.

16' jon boat? No console or small side console, IMO. Depending on the width

In a 16' Jon boat I would rather have a side console, because of the room a center console take up.

Yea, I don't know what y'all use 16' aluminums for, but even the side console gets in the way some in ours, but it's set up as a bass boat with decks and all so I don't mind it. If I had an open floor 16' aluminum with just a front deck I'd rather have just a seat on the side and something to hold the helm/steering wheel, no console. Floor space is valuable real estate

To me you have more room in side console and can fish 3 people.

not sure what layout those are from, but my g3 was like option 2, minus the livewell. i hated it, especially fishing by myself because it always leaned. we regularly fish 4 out of my boat no problems, and even with 2, we're usually both on the front deck and never got in anyones way.

i see where you see theres more room in a side console.

Regular bass fishing a center console wouldn't be terrible, I'd probably still have the floor space I need. But crabbing or hunting or anything it would be a PITA

The leaning and the ride comfort are my main concerns. Most of the time it will be just me and my little boy in the boat.
Plus I like to stand when I'm driving most of the time.

I regularly fish a 16' flat with a center console. Get the side console. That center console takes up a lot of space in an already small boat. When you walk next to the console, you have to lean over it. This makes storing rods in the console mounted rod holders impractical. It really kills the fishing space, and makes it so that you basically pick one spot to fish from and don't move.

Now, it also has a built in live well in front of the console. Without the live well, there'd be a bit more deck space, but the console would still hinder movement.

Get the side console.

I'd go CC, but I rarely fish with more than 2 people.

Whatever fits your needs best as far as use goes, go with it. I don't have too much of a lean problem, never notice it driving at least, but the boat I was talking about isnt a typical jon boat, it's a cajun special. Lots of flotation in there too. Plus a 16' aluminum is a utility boat for me, if you're gonna be just fishing from it then it matters less.

Mine is pretty much set up the same way with carpeted floors,a front deck with trolling motor.
I'm gonna use it to get up in those small canals and sloughs to fish for bream and such.

I believe a center is better, which is what I have. So much easier to stand up and see what's on the water. and also, when the wind is blowing onto the driver's side, you won't get sprayed.

what I did with mine was "box" it in. used marine plywood to fill from bow to the stern. add hinges with a handle, and then paint it. So now it's like a platform that you can walk around the entire boat. plus a lot of storage space for everything.
