Florida keys in October

We are going to Marathon, Florida in mid-October. 4 couple renting a house for a week. I never been there not sure what to expect other than snorkeling. We have a small boat rented for three days. Anybody have any fishing experience ,other than tarpon?

Inshore fishing should be productive. Bonefish on the flats is a possibility. Small snapper and whatnot are typically had. Ask a local whats biting at one of the bait shops.

October can be hit or miss with the tropical weather. Strong winds and large waves can be an issue.

Go out to content keys for easy lobstering, buy a hot spots map and do some snapper(mangrove and yellow tail) fishing all very easy, with limited supplies.

What size boat are you renting?

What he said... Also, get a map that shows the wrecks off of American Reef and Sombrero Reef. Great snapper holes.
Mahi should still be around if you can get to 600-800' and work weeds/trash/and birds.

That's not that small. I was thinking like a 16 or something

You are a little further up than I stay. First, like I said get a top spots map. They are available at any bait shop. it will have spots for diving, fishing, etc...

Contents might be a little bit far with a single 90hp, but its still the easiest place to lobster. buy a cheap kit(stick, net, measuring device, etc...) at any store, make sure you have gloves as well. If you are in the keys for lobster season and have a boat, this is really a must do and you can make it one of your snorkeling/diving days.

The map should put you on some easy mangrove and yellow tail spots. I have found yellow tail is the easiest to fish for, closer to land and you with usually get some mangroves as well. Just ask what the best chum at the time.

Hit up some of the dive spots you see on the map as well.

The FL bay side will be the most calm seas wise, but be careful, weather can pop up quickly

re: Florida keys in October

We camped on the Tortugas and fished from a yak. Squid worked better for us than anything else. Mostly caught French Grunts (we were told), about as many as we wanted. I hope they were legal cause that was dinner on two nights. Not real big, our keepers were 10-11 inches probably.

Also had a nice grouper that had to be thrown back, a couple of small mangrove snapper, and several other species that I just don't know at all. Ate two of them and they were good whatever they were.

Easily my favorite camping trip ever. But back to original question I don't think you can go wrong with squid, nothing else was working for us; we tried gold spoons, topwaters, gulp shrimp, ratltraps, plastic cocahoes.

The boat is a 20 ft. pro cat with a 150 hp. I guess that should get us about anywhere we want. The lobster gig and snapper fishing sounds good.
Can you rent fishing rods or should I bring my own. We are flying so don't know about carrying fishing rods on plane.

Thanks
