Dracula: Gary Oldman vs Bela Lugosi

Bela Lugosi's portrayal is iconic. Yet, Gary Oldman put a soul into him.
Was having a conversation earlier with some people who feel that the iconic image, speaks louder than a great on screen performance. How does the MB feel?
If that film came out today, I think Oldman would be an Oscar favorite.

They are very different Draculas, portrayed at very different times in history. The 1931 film would not have been allowed to show 2/3 of what Oldman was allowed to do onscreen and yet Bela had women fainting in the aisles...without fangs or a creepy soundtrack.
I really like both portrayals, but Coppola's version was WAY too focused on the romance aspect and changed Stoker's story from what it was intended to be. Bela was suave and even his portrayal is not what Stoker intended.
Of the two, I have to go with Bela. He's iconic and, unfortunately, this role typecast him for the rest of his life. Oldman is a chameleon and great in everything he does, but no one will ever define him as being Dracula.

Why are we even having this discussion? The greatest vampire portrayal in history was obviously Robert Pattinson's Edward Cullen.

He was a vampire? I thought that movie was about fairies.

Dracula and Imortal beloved are Oldman's two greatest performances in My Opinion. he is mesmerizing in both films and he is great in just about everything he's ever done.

I absolutely loved Old man as Dracula. He was spectacular.

as much as i love Gary Oldmans potrayal, Lugosi will always be the best.

Lugosi will always be the definitive Dracula and rightly so.
