Looking for something at most in the $200-$300 range that would work well for my apartment bedroom (16x16). Using for playing music/Netflix from the PC. Preferably something that can sit on a desk (under for the subwoofer).

So far I've found:

Hoping for suggestions to get the best bang for my buck. Thanks in advance.

Your apartment neighbors will appreciate your high-quality subwoofer.

I will personally vouch for the Audioengine A5 speakers. I have had a pair for going on about 5 years in my bedroom and they put out some great sound. Within the first year, I had the amp go out on them and called them up. I shipped the bad speaker to them and got a brand new pair in the box, so now I have a spare passive right sitting around. I have thought about buying another spare passive A5 off ebay and trying to put a small amp on them somewhere.

You can still find the A5s on Amazon for low 300s. I haven't heard the A2+ so not sure how they would stack up.

Thanks. I was looking at online reviews and they appear to be really good speakers with one drawback being an overheating issue if you play at too high of levels for an extended period of time. Have you experienced this problem?

I probably won't be blasting the speakers to where this ever becomes an issue.

quote:

Playing the speakers at anything over about 20-30 percent of maximum volume (measure by the position of the volume knob) causes the master speaker -- the one with the amplifier -- to heat up. The back of the speaker actually becomes too hot to touch. And if the speakers remain at that volume for more than about an hour they will cut off.

Once the speakers cool off for a while they seem fine.

I e-mailed Audioengine about this and they say it's a safety feature. The speakers are built to cut out if they get too hot, and playing them loudly won't damage them, the CSR told me. He recommended running a fan on the master speaker if I planned to play them at elevated volume, which I think is an unacceptable solution. I told him I wasn't sure I would have purchased the speakers if I had known about the overheating issue.

It looks like the A5+ fixed this issue, but it is also is a little outside of the price range I was looking at.

Update: Audioengine kindly accepted a warranty return on my A5s and swapped them out for the updated A5+. The most noticeable difference is a large heat sink on the back of the powered speaker. They are significantly better than the A5s at handling midrange and high volume.

I haven't had any heat issues on mine and I have played them for days on end when I was playing some PC games. I never keep mine more than about 20% or so on the knob and adjust with the computer. I know I talked with customer service one time about the speakers cutting off a lot and they told to keep the knob at least about 20% and adjust from there or the auto amps will cut themselves off.

ETA. I will also say, I had considered buying the sub before I got the speakers and decided to hold off and I'm glad I did. They don't boom, but they sound really good for movies, music and gaming without a sub.

A few questions for you:
What kind of music do you tend to listen to/prefer? Is "boomy" bass better than "tight" bass? Are your music files streaming + mp3, or do you prefer uncompressed audio? When watching movies, how important is the "rumble" effect from loud scenes (explosions, trains passing by at high speed)? And lastly, do you have any preference between powered/unpowered (+amp)?

To compare, I have a Denon 3313 receiver in my living room with a Polk Tower front/big center/dipole surround set up. I tell you this to let you know what kind of stuff i typically use.

For computer/bedroom use I was looking for a good set of powered bookshelves and this knocked it out.

I listen to all types of music. Country is what I listen to most but I also listen to rock and some rap.

Tight bass every time.

typically 128 kbps+ mp3s and streaming. I watch some BluRays on it but I prefer putting them on my bigger tv in my living room if I am watching them.

Honestly, most of the movies I watch in my bedroom aren't that type of movie. I mainly watch easier movies there and put the action/louder movies on in my living room due to the surround sound and bigger tv.

On the more expensive side, you've got your KRK Rokit 5 g3. You can probably find them used for a bit cheaper. They fit the bill in pretty much every way, but out of a 5" woofer, your low end isn't going to be what it would out of something with a sub.

Seeing that your profile says you're in eastern Alabama is a little sad, because These Bose computer speakers are well worth what the guy is asking, but it's in New Orleans. I include this in hopes that your profile location is a hoax, but you'll likely get no use out of that one, sadly.

Presonus Eros E4.5 gets a really good review from this guy. He particularly likes the bass. Other reviews I have read call it slightly understated, but always very tight. It's more than you'd expect out of a 4.5", but it's definitely not replacing a subwoofer if you want your low-end. Unfortunately, it also is missing any line out for a woofer (does have a headphone out, though)

Check out the Monoprice 5" powered studio monitors. The guys over at head-fi recommend them in the sub-$400 range. They say they're pretty much just rebranded M-audio BX5

And lastly, going another way with it: You can pair the Dayton Audio DTA-1 with their own b652 6.5" speakers for about $90, leaving plenty of room for a sub to make up for the lack of presence in the bass, but most people are typically pretty happy with Dayton Audio's products. It goes against what you said you were looking at, kind of, but I think it fits the bill pretty decently.

Pretty much everything, but mostly rock.

tight would be preferable

Yeah I pretty much stream or mp3, not uncompressed

Not that important and probably powered, but no real preference
