It doesn't even come close to touching their self titled debut album. Realesed in 1978, it was one of the most hard rocking, face melting albums at that time. Imagine being in the Disco and Soft rock era and then BOOM, David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen come firing at your fricking face at 1000 mph. People in the 70's were shitting their pants when they played that album

And the Cradle Will Rock, Fools, Every Body Wants Some, Take your Whiskey Home, and In A Simple Rhyme hold their own just fine.

Nowhere even close to Running with the Devil, Eruption, you really got me, Ain't Talkin bout love, I'm the One, Jamie's Cryin, and of course Dave's finest "Ice Cream Man"

Fair Warning for me. A heavier sound and much darker lyrics.
ETA: I'm aware nobody really cares about VH's lyrics.

I know I did. The riffs on that album are amazing. I hadn't heard anything like that before. That being said, WaCF is pretty damn close to it.

I was like a 10 year old kid at the pool when the radio cranked on Eruption/You Really Got Me and it was earth shaking.

nowadays, 'women & children first' is the VH album i like most....but there's no shame claiming any of their first four albums as your favorite.

The first album hasn't aged as well as some of the others.

Van Halen II & Fair Warning for me.

to me, 'women & children first' is more timeless than the first album. that said, the debut is still mostly fresh IMO....it's the slew of wannabe bands emulating it that might've affected its shelf life slightly, 'tho.

First time I heard Van Halen I was about 12, visiting an older kid whose dad had the biggest stereo I had ever seen. Flashing lights, separate tweeters on top of huge woofers, massive reel-to-reel deck, etc.
He was showing me how bad arse the stereo was when he and a buddy started talking about Van Halen. Who's that? The other kid got his tape (I think it was a cassette) out of the car, and they popped it in.
When that big arse stereo started cranking out Running With the Devil, I was blown away. Then came Eruption, and You Really Got Me. Are you kidding?
I think I ripped off Columbia House for that one. A few years later, I got paid for a part-time job and rode my bike straight to the record store to buy an 8-track of the new Women and Children First.
Somehow also got Van Halen II. Wore them all out. Still play them. All great.
