Snorkeling is fantastic right off the beach most places. Spend one morning and do a hike to Waterlemon Cay and snorkel there, very much worth it.
Most of the island (80% I believe) is a national park, so there are not many crowds.
Watch out for the free roaming donkeys while you are driving, they tend to hang out in the road at times.
Everywhere on the island the burgers are expensive and terrible.

Where are you staying?
I love St. John. We stayed in coral bay. We didn't eat out much, we just stocked up the kitchen. We loved just hanging on the beach. Francis or cinnamon bay were our favorites.
My favorite beach destination. Better than Hawaii.

Deli Grotto if it's still there. Water taxi over to Virgin Gorda, snorkel the baths, and buy you a Cuban cigar afterwards at the gift shop. Just watch out for the fighting cocks they have there.

Just got back from the Virgin Islands next week. If you only leave the island once, take the ferry over to Jost Van Dyke and go over to the soggy dollar bar. Order yourself a pain killer and make some friends. For lunch, walk 150 yards down the beach to One Love Bar and get the Lobster Quesadilla. No need to thank me just pay it forward.
Sandy Spit is also a cool little day excursion.

Beach Bar is an awesome hang out. And right there in the bay, you can rent a little inflatable zodiac and go up and down the coast, if you're not afraid of taking it into the shipping channels you can go all the way north and work your way down. I highly recommend that.

Woodys bar in town is a great little place if the crowd is right.
Skinny legs another cool bar and grill.
Plenty of awesome remote beaches.
Ferry to BVI. If you can get to Willie T's on Norman Island it's a must.
As already said Jost is a great day trip. St. John has a lot to offer but if you are there a week venture out and explore the other areas
Jost
Tortola
The Baths
Norman
Bitter End
Sopers Hole
Marina Cay
