Tailgating at Reliant Stadium

For the Oregon and TCU games at Cowboy Stadium, we were able to park along the curb around the perimeter of the parking lots early in the morning and tailgate in the green space. The cars lined up along the curb was the "line" once the parking lot opened in the mid-afternoon. When the parking lot opened, everyone got into their cars to enter the parking lot and then just backed into the space at the tailgate. It worked out real well.
Apparently that won't work at Reliant Stadium. I talked to the parking lot supervisor and they said there is a fence around each parking lot that would prevent us from getting into the green space. We would have to wait until the lot opens around 4 p.m. to do any tailgating.
Not worth hauling all the equipment for just a couple of hours of tailgating. Is there anybody out there familiar with the tailgating and the parking for the Texans games? Is there a fence around the parking lots? There is not tailgating until the lot opens?

The Texans website proudly announces their efforts to promote tailgating to make it one of the best experiences in the NFL.
I guess tailgating at Reliant Stadium is a card table with a box Ritz crackers. Nobody will want to make an effort to set up a real tailgate for 2 hours.
I am hoping someone familiar with Reliant Stadium can shed some light and let us know if I received some bad information.

Just last week I read an article about this group of Texans fans who call themselves "Bulls Eye Tailgating". They won some kinda national competition as the top tailgate in the country. They have a pretty impressive setup, but nothing different than what we see around campus every Saturday at LSU.
Anyways, it couldn't hurt to contact them to see if they have any tips at all they can give you. Just google bulls eye tailgating. They have a website.

The Texans tailgating are the closest thing in football in America to LSU tailgating. You just have to get a parking lot spot, but the tailgating should be fine if it is anything like a Texans game.

Things with tailgating at Reliant is they now restrict tailgating to ticketed patrons only and limit the amount of time you can tailgate. Back in 2010 there was a game against the Cowboys were fights broke out between the fanbases. Many of the fighting was attributed to drunk people not even attending the game. Since then they limited tailgating to only people who possess tickets to the game and limit amount of time you can tailgate. Ey are trying to prevent any indents from happening were some could get seriously injured or killed.

I can chime in on this. I used to work for the Texans, specifically in gameday operations from 2002-2007. I worked almost every event held at Reliant during those years, with the exception of the Rodeo.
All parking lots on the property are fenced in. They all open 4 hours prior to kickoff. Each space in the lot is sold, so it is much different than a college campus where one can park a vehicle and use the space around them. There is a minimal amount of green space in each lot adjacent to some of the parking spots. These areas are considered the prime spots for tailgating. You get a little bit of room to spread out instead of just using the small area immediately behind your vehicle if you're in the middle of one of the rows.
The four hour rule sucks for the fans, but unfortunately it's a financial matter and also a crowd control mechanism. The parking attendants and police officers that direct traffic are a large part of the operational budget for an event, and when those parking lots open up, they're all getting paid.

Thanks kmwlsu.
A previous post mentioned the bullseye tailgaters. Their website mentions they tailgate in the yellow lot and I get the impression that it is an all day tailgate.
The website does not have a link to contact them to inquire how they can tailgate all day.

Yep. If I go, I'm gonna "tailgate" at a bar with some TVs. Get to the stadium an hour or so before kick off.

Most the Texans games start at noon, and they probably get out there at 8am. I think people are allowed to hang out in the lots an hour or so after the game ends, so they probably do that too.
In their eyes they're there all day. In the eyes of us LSU fans, they're only there for half the day. I guess they do the best they can with what they're given to work with :)
