I know many Soviet-born people in NY. Guess their opinions on US leftism/Obama.

I would assume they support Obama. Europeans are much tolerant of the state.

They probably think he's not left enough and is a very conservative right winger by soviet standards.

Housing was not great quality, but completely free.
It was illegal to be unemployed
Each family was entitled to a summer home on the black sea
Cars were nonexistent for 90% of the populace

You're all surprisingly wrong. They all absolutely hate Obama and are incredulous at the sight of America, in the immediate wake of the Cold War, shifting left. All the Soviet-Americans I know are Jewish, save one, who is half Jewish, half Muslim.
As far as what these people do for a living? Plenty of things, and they all bust their asses and despise those who do not.
My angle of this thread is to express surprise at the irony that the people I know who most genuinely long for what I see as traditional American values came from the Soviet Union.

Are you sure about that entitlement to a beach house at the Black Sea?!?! I grew up in a Soviet satellite country and, while the other points you bring up are true, this one doesn't sound right at all. The only people who had beach houses were the high party officials.

There are plenty of Christian Russians in this country, usually concentrated in cities other than NYC. Look for any Russian Orthodox church and you will find a large Russian community.
