Oil & Gas. I'm trying to transition out of the field. I have a jumbled up resume due to Iraq deployments. I thought with the rental property I would be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the "money" side of business operations.

ETA: Maybe I'm overthinking this.

Do you own it though an LLC or just in your name? If there is some kind of corporate entity I would include it because as you said it shows some experience with business operations and ownership of real property, which could be relevant for an O&G job.

If it's something you just own then I would leave it off.

Just curious... how does owning it through an LLC have anything to do with business ops experience?

The business would be treated exactly the same whether it was owned solely by an individual or passed through an LLC that is owned solely by an individual.

I just dont understand how an LLC would affect that at all. Maybe if it was an LLC with multiple properties in multiple locations or with multiple owners and you were the managing director.... Or maybe if you were looking for legal work and you wanted to prove you could do the paperwork to set up an LLC.

Are you listing your stock and bond portfolios on there?

If you actively managed several real estate properties you own, and you are applying for a job that involves actively managing real estate property, then I might list that as a job. Otherwise, no.

You are right about it being the same thing, I'm purely talking resume optics.

If I see:
XYZ LLC, Manager
Random BS about managing property

Then at worst I would ignore it and at best I would think this guy might have some idea about business entities and real property ownership (which would be relevant for a job in land/leasing)

If I see some random line about owning property and leasing it out, then I would be annoyed that it was on the resume.

I agree with this.

I would probably ask questions during an interview and then when he told me that its his 2 bedroom condo in a college town, I would probably be a little annoyed.

Just my thoughts.

I wouldn't. And if you do it and write a bs description of you managing a rental property, I would wonder if other things on the resume are bs/embellishments as well.

If you rebalanced funds in your 401k, would you list "actively managed retirement funds in a multimillion dollar company"?
