Isner is the only top-50 player and he's never even sniffed the semis in a major.

For frick's sake, American futbol is more advanced than American men's tennis.

This. Plus it's usually dominated by 2-3 guys. After the last great American Sampras, we've gone through Switzerland, Spain, and Serbia. It will cycle back after they decline.

men's juniors

or the men's doubles final included 3 out of a possible four players that are Americans?

Yeah, but no majors since '03. I think this is just a fluke result of 2 to 3 freakshows dominating the sport the last decade. But, I also think a lot of country club kids now hit the golf course instead, whereas more were playing tennis in the '70's and '80's.

I'd agree to that, tennis is very much about money and who you know, or can get in front of..

I used to agree with this...until I started playing competitively within the last couple of years...then I started appreciating how good some of those guys are and now it is fun to watch the big 4.

Because in Europe kids are put into tennis academies from the age of 6. They play tennis 9 hours a day. Bolleterri is extremely expensive and I have heard that most of the US kids try to do home school and train with local pros. The problem is the local pro isnt that good.

It's all about the way they train over seas. The Europeans learn how to play on clay courts which teaches more patience and point structure. Americans focus more on drills rather than point play scenarios causing something to be lost in the transition from practice to matches. Americans playing on hard courts teaches impatience and that's it's better to hit the shite out of the ball rather than build a point.

It's known around the world that Americans are the best drillers but are terrible at teaching actual match play.

The court surface issue should change with the spread of clay courts in the USA.

Not the best way to measure overall quality, in part because of this:

Now, the lack of guys in to top 50 is an indication.

I think the growth of golf has an impact, but I don't know how much. Our popular culture hasn't looked at men's tennis in a long time...

I don't know exactly why but it seems like players from other countries work harder and seem more technically skilled and well-rounded than the Americans. Just my opinion. I hope we can get some majors soon.
