Pan Am 759 crashed in Kenner..

quote:

Pan Am Flight 759, operated by a Boeing 727-235, N4737 Clipper Defiance, was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Miami to San Diego, with en route stops in New Orleans and Las Vegas. On July 9, 1982, the plane that made this route was forced down by a microburst and crashed into the New Orleans suburb of Kenner. All 145 people on board, as well as 8 more on the ground, were killed. The crash had the highest number of aviation fatalities in 1982, and as of 2013 remains the fifth-deadliest air disaster to occur in United States territory.

quote:

Flight 759 began its takeoff from Runway 10 at the New Orleans International Airport (now Louis Armstrong New Orleans International), in Kenner, Louisiana at 4:07:57 PM central daylight time, bound for Las Vegas, Nevada. At the time of Flight 759's takeoff, there were thunderstorms over the east end of the airport. The winds were gusty and swirling. Flight 759 lifted off the runway, climbed to an altitude of between 95 and 150 feet (29 and 46 m), and then began to descend. About 2,376 feet (724 m) from the end of runway, the aircraft struck a line of trees at an altitude of about 50 feet (15 m). The aircraft continued descending for another 2,234 feet (681 m), hitting trees and houses before crashing in the residential area of Kenner, La., about 4,610 feet (1405 m) from the end of the runway.

The aircraft was destroyed during the impact, explosion, and subsequent ground fire. A total of 153 people were killed (all 145 passengers and crew on board and 8 on the ground). Another 4 people on the ground sustained injuries. In one of the destroyed houses, a baby was discovered in a crib covered with debris that protected her from the flames. Six houses were destroyed; five houses were damaged substantially.

I saw this plane go down. At the time, I couldn't believe my eyes.

This was tragic. My parents had two friends on this flight.

If I'm not mistaken, this crash led the FAA to develop and implement the technology that is now in place for wind sheer and microbursts.

I recall the breaking news about this as I was younger living in NC.
I was upset about this and I became intrigued about jet crashes. iIRC,this was close in time to some other notorius plane crashes (Air Florida? )

This is one of my recurring dreams: watching a series of airliners crash on approach to landing. RIP #759 passengers, crew and innocent bystanders.

I believe MSY was the first, or at least among the first, airports to get Doppler radar.

There was a good documentary on this 2 years ago for the 30th anniversary. I think it was on PBS or maybe a local channel let me check around.

Edit: It was on the local COX ch4 probably hard to find now.

Plane crashes are one of my recurring dreams as well. They're always terrifying.

I sometimes have a very graphic and detailed nightmare of being at ground zero (usually outside at my parents place) as a plane crash is happening. It's one of those dreams where you wake up feeling affected by it for several hours.

Who would have made the decision at the time to take off? If that person is alive, I wonder how much regret they had/have...

Pop worked at MSY back then. He wasn't on shift when it happened but went in later that day. Consensus in the shop was that the pilot was nuts to take off into that weather.

All systems on the ground back then were vacuum tube computers. After this, he and several co-workers developed an application to run on those old machines to predict crash site locations based on last known good flight data.

i know one of the fireman who arrived on the scene. He said there was a red liquid flowing into the catch basins on the street, and took him a while to realize it was blood.
That's the thing that got him the most he said. COudln't believe there could be that much blood.

I remember it very well.

Everyone was out playing, and then everyone went inside and turned on the tv to watch the live broadcasts- it was horrible.
