It's probably coming from the WIFI service on the plane.

Google knows departure and arrival times, so it's likely just a percentage bar.

I would assume this applies:

quote:

How is this related to the Travel or Flight Status search information that is already available on Google? Does ITA Software power those already?
Google currently offers two travel search features. First, our flight tracker search feature enables users to see flight status for arriving and departing US flights. When users type the name of the airline and the flight number (e.g. “united 741”) into the search box, Google will return updated flight information from flightstats.com. Second, we offer a travel search feature to help users looking to book travel. For example, search for [New York to SFO] and Google offers you the option to specify a date range and choose from a variety of online travel services to see results. Both features are aimed at improving search quality and neither is based on any financial compensation to or from Google. Neither feature relies on data from ITA Software.

just as a follow up. i was waiting for my friend yesterday in the cell phone parking lot and watching the slider.

within probably a minute of it saying the plane was 100% done, he texted me & said "taxi-ing"

shite is legit.

Yeah, Google tends to let projects bake until they are dead-on-balls accurate before releasing to a wide audience. Google Now helps me out all the time when it tells me it's time to go to a scheduled event. My wife is a typical woman in that she will continue "getting ready" until the last minute. I can tell her it's time to go a dozen times, but nothing happens until I tell her "look, Google says it's time to leave!" Then we go.

Is that an industry term?

When it comes to data driven services, yes.

Another feature concerning flights I just noticed. Look at the airport on Maps and it will show your departure/arrival time.

when i think back only 5-10 years ago..and trying to find out if a flight was on-time..and getting a busy signal trying to call the airline or airport..and where we are today..wow.

i remember the panic in getting to a large airport and looking at all the different screens trying to locate the correct 'incoming' flights ..the correct airline's listing...and figuring out gate numbers, etc.

its kinda how i felt about traffic jams a few years ago. i didnt see how it would ever be possible without an extensive network of cameras, speed radars and satellites to ever predict a traffic jam before you got there.

i would have NEVER thought like waze and crowd-sourced a solution FAR AND AWAY more simple & effective than a $$$ intrastructure overhaul...just turn a GPS app on everyone's phone into a game.

fricking genius. now not only do i know before i leave my office wtf is going on with interstates..but more than likely i also know on backroads way ahead of time too thanks to the fact other people already STUCK are turning waze on to see wtf is going on, hence i'm warned and i'm not even there yet. ..oh and they let me know the cops are out too.

the things we take for granted....

Yeah, now we can get up to the second updates automatically pushed to our phones, right there on the lock screen for us.

fricking genius.

I will never get over the genius behind the way Google made their voice recognition and speech to text so good... they just operated a free 411 service for a few years.

And now they have people walking around playing Ingress to help them map out better walking directions.

Cool, but none of that has anything to do with Waze.

so what's that crazy app i'm using to try to become a 'warrior level' driver and hear magical sounds when i drive over 'road candy' and get points for reporting cops in the bushes and debris on the road?

...oh yeah, waze.

Maybe I shoulda been more specific...

The cool part about real-time traffic updates even on backroads is not waze... it's plain old built-in google data.

Ah what the hell. I don't even know why I chimed in here.

Sorry, CAD.
