Are there any OT'ers that were contractors and then used their skill/exp in a trade and got hired on at an actual plant?

If so, do you think that being a contractor helped you get on with a plant?

A co-worker of mine is leaving us, b/c he got hired on at one of the plants down the river. He told me that the hiring committee was and is always impressed with the work that we do, so he said that he guessed that gave him a leg up getting in.

thoughts?

Absolutely. I'm a contractor and have worked chemical, nuclear, refineries, and paper mills. Having a lot of plant experience gets your name out. I get job offers all the time for full time work. Just wouldn't make the money I do as a contractor.

This is not uncommon. There's several large Industrial Contractors that have a pipeline into plant jobs, especially Turner Industries people going to Shell/Motiva.

Having plant experience, no matter where from is always an asset.

Having plant experience in the plant one is applying for is a big plus.

Having plant experience working for a highly reputable firm in the plant one is applying for is a huge advantage.

Helped me. Had a few degrees and worked inside the plant that hired me. They lives it when they asked me safety questions I could answer them about their specific plant.

Worked construction for about 8 months before I got hired on. Was very lucky
