Diply News

quote:

Griffin Furlong lost his mother to cancer when he was just six years old. He grew up in various homeless shelters, never being able to invite his friends over; he couldn't take the same bus, and he was even picked on by some of the kids. Yet, at the end of high school, he graduated with a 4.65 GPA, a perfect score. No one knew this, though, at least not until his valedictorian speech. In it, he said: "I perform the way I do in the classroom because I have everything to lose."

The best news in America is always less sexy, but this is a great, short read. He always took the initiative to raise over $100,000 for college...by himself. This is the kind of kid is late mother would have been so proud of.

I'm surprised no teachers took him "in."

It's an embarrassment that homelessness still exists in the richest country this world has ever known

It's a "me" society. As sad as something like this is, it's not surprising at all. Talk is easy. Actually lifting a finger to fix the situation is another story.

Is this a thing? When did it become possible to get higher than a 4.0?

Honor classes are weighted more heavily at some schools.

Some schools have "Honor" classes that are weighted more, so instead of 4 points for an "A" you get 5.

This inspired me to finish the homework I had been putting off. Thanks homeless kid! Now I think I'll go eat dinner with my family.
