Has anyone ever done a movie on reputation alone?

I mean has a production company/director ever done a movie with almost zero promotion or advertisement. I wonder if it could work. For example if Nolan announced he was doing a movie with an A-list cast and the only thing that was released about the movie was the cast, type of movie, and release date. No interviews, no sneak peeks, no trailers.

Depends on the film you're trying to make.

A small indie opening on select screens with no plans of expansion? Sure. Word of mouth would be good enough.

Opening nationally? No chance.

I doubt anyone would want to take that chance. It's all about that opening weekend and how much money you can make!

Soderbergh's dual release films came close. I believe Bubble was the first.

I'm sure, but I imagine you're speaking of this scenario that results in people flocking to the theaters and the movie topping the box office in a busy season

Even if the movie was trash they would show 3 or 4 of the only decent clips and try to promote mainly off rep. I dont think they would just wing it.

Pretty much doing that with Hercules. The only advertising done for that was Dwayne Johnson's fricking twitter pictures.

That and the commercials, the movie trailers, and the web ads.
