There is about a -15% chance that this happens.

The 2006 jersey is a nice touch.

Remember just 3 years ago we all thought Freddy may have finally "got it". He was coming off a pretty good Gold Cup and was captaining the U-23 in Olympic qualifiers.

...good times.

It's too bad none of these teams let him progress in their youth system. Obviously D.C. United didn't have one but Benefica could have done better than just loaning him out to a couple of teams.

if it hasn't happened by now it's never going to. Best of luck to Adu though.

The chance of him playing in a youth system was destroyed when he signed to play "first-team level" at age 14. It's a shame, too, because had he chosen a European youth system over the MLS back when he had that choice, I think, by this point, he would be the closest thing we'd ever have to a world-class talent.

He could've been a true #10.

at the very least if another Adu type player falls from the heavens, we won't make the same mistake.... off to the Barca/United/Milan/whatever youth academy with you!

I guess it was hard to pass up whatever D.C. was willing to pay for Adu. The perils of being a young soccer nation was that we didn't know how to handle our exception youth talent.

You just look at that U-20 World Cup back in 2008 and see how far ahead he was of guys like Jozy and Bradley at that time and just think... damn.

I still believe he's older than we're told. Fake / inaccurate birth certificate - Ghana be shady.

Even if he is 1/2 years older than what his birth certificate says, his game was never predicated on being more physical than the opposing players. In terms of technical ability, he is one of the best "talents" that we've ever had.

US Soccer could not have stepped in and said, "Wait a second, Adu family, he's too young to be playing for an MLS first team. Why don't ya'll accept less money to play somewhere else."

Freddy was a gold mine for U.S. Soccer. He had a bunch of endorsements and he was a media hit (they even called him "the next Pele."

They weren't gonna pass up the opportunity to make him the face of the league. They knew if a European team got a hold of him, the MLS would probably never see him again which is what should have happened.

That would have been a terrible business decision for the MLS.

Exactly. It may have been unfortunate that he took the path that he did, but the real culprit was that professional soccer teams in the USA did not have adequate players to keep him out of first-team senior-level soccer. I think MLS as a league now is better equipped to keep the next player out of that type of situation.

Probably but most teams have youth systems now so he would have spent more time there before getting called up to the senior squad.

"My family was really poor," says Adu. "My mum was working two or three jobs to take care of my brother and me. So if Nike come to you and say they want to give you a million-dollar contract and the MLS wants to make you the highest-paid player at 14, you can't say no. You just can't.

If LeBron could have signed at 14 and lifted his mother out of poverty, would he have? Impossible to know but poverty is a major driving force. Kid was just getting hair on his sack and he was thrown into the DC United team when MLS was trying to sustain the momentum from the 2002 run.
