The National Transportation Safety Board has rejected a petition asking the agency to revisit its findings in the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800, which exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 12 minutes after takeoff from JFK during a flight to Paris, killing all 230 people aboard.

The petition was filed last summer by a group known as the TWA 800 Project in conjunction with the release of an Epix documentary that drew renewed attention to the high-profile accident. The documentary features NTSB and TWA investigators who allege the airplane was shot down by Navy missiles, as opposed to experiencing an explosion in the center fuel tank, as the NTSB said in its final report.

I don't think so either.

It was a long time ago when I read the article and I just can't remember. The cover-up was huge and involved several different federal agencies.

A plane exploded in midair and crashed into the ocean at night, with the debris sinking several hundred feet to the bottom.

It's kinda tough to piece that crime scene together with any kind of certainty. And after 18 years there probably isn't much point in trying to.

not really, I'm sure you can find it by googling, but they pretty much reassembled that airplane in a hangar as they were recovering it, plus that was pretty close to shore, in relatively shallow water

Not to mention the NTSB already knows what happened to it, so hell no they aren't going to open it back up.

yes, and their conclusions on AA587 are pretty suspect as well, too close to 9-11 to have it be anything other than pilot error

One other thing is the FBI made a deal with the devil. They weighed out the cost versus benefits and decided that it was better for everybody concerned to cover it up.

that's usually the determining factor, and it's been in practice for decades

Can you explain this, please? I keep reading it, and it makes no sense to me.

I think he is saying that no matter what it really was they damned sure weren't going to call it a terrorist attack.

Wasnt it the most in depth crash investigation ever performed?

Seems odd they would present such an opportunity for a conspiracy to be uncovered.

Yeah, I don't understand why they wouldn't call it a terrorist attack...It would have supported the war effort.

AA587 went down 11/12/2001, I was very close to this investigation, the most likely cause, or a least a major contributor, was a poorly designed rudder lockout system, the debris field was highly suspect as well, as certain parts were so far from where they should have been, and were not consistent with the aircraft simply "crashing" shortly after departure, that there was ample reason to investigate the possibility of terrorism, as the country was reeling from 9/11, and Airbus couldn't afford to have one of their fleets grounded, the blame was placed on the pilot, for "rudder walking," because it had the least economical/fear factor impact, a friend of mine flew that actual aircraft to JFK from SJU, the night before, and he was interrogated at length by the FAA, NTSB, FBI, AA, and Airbus, under the veiled implication that he had somehow sabotaged the plane
