Teach me about the NYC neighborhoods

I'm planning a trip to NYC. If I'm staying in a place more than 2 nights, I usually like using VRBO. I've been looking at apartments to rent for a week, and I've found some awesome places, I just need some info about the neighborhoods.
I know Manhattan is where everything is located, but apartments seem to be much cheaper in Brooklyn. Is the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood legit? I don't think I'm hipster enough for Williamsburg. How long would it take to get to Manhattan from Brooklyn Heights?
What Manhattan neighborhoods should I try? Chelsea? Grammercy?
Help me out.

The last time we spent more than an overnight in NYC - we stayed in Chelsea. Really liked it - convenient to everywhere.
Next time we go, we're staying in the West Village.

What are you looking to do? Brooklyn is cool, but Long Island City is very much the next big scene here. Plus it has a much better view of Manhattan than Brooklyn. There are a bunch of brand new high rise towers I bet you could find on vrbo or airbnb with sick views overlooking Manhattan. Also there are 7 different subway lines running between the Queens Plaza, Queensboro Plaza, and Court Square subway stops.
Keep in mind the nyc govt here DOES NOT like airbnb or vrbo. They were recently ruled illegal hotels. Be careful abt where you stay.
Eta: Astoria is cool too, but as a tourist there are only a couple of reasons to come out here. Long Island City is closer to Manhattan and has more subway access.

5 mins on subway. 20 min walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, give or take, in each instance depending on your exact location.

Brooklyn Heights, Carol Gardens and Dumbo are all really nice neighborhoods in Brooklyn a short ride into Manhattan, plus they have awesome restaurants themselves. Pretty much anywhere in Manhattan is super legit below the 90's, the hoods just have different feels to them. I'd avoid midtown and midtown west though if i had a choice

I used to live on 23rd ave and 38th street in Astoria before I moved to basically the LIC/Astoria border. Now I basically live across from the Studio Square beer garden
I used to walk to the bohemian beer hall a lot. Can't beat 6$ draft beer for ALL of their taps. The place is fun, but at night the clientele can be questionable.Posted on 7/3/14 at 9:37 am to NYNolaguy1

True. I lived there 10 years ago, so that area has undergone a lot of changes. When I was there, Astoria was still somewhat cheap, and LIC was desolate and was just beginning to turn.

Ok well then I can tell you where not to stay. Stay away from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It's homeless central past 9pm, and being so close to the Broadway theatres you will be looking for a cheap spot. That neighborhood is Hell's Kitchen. When I used to work over there, I would see crackheads, pimps, their girls, and homeless guys all hustling for cash on my walk to the subway. It's what Times Square used to look like.
If you didn't want to stay around Times Square I would suggest Long Island City, the area around Madison Square Park (Not the garden) between Union Square and Herald Square, and Midtown East near Grand Central.

Don't stay in Brooklyn. We stayed in Chelsea and it was great. I would stick to the lower west side.

I rented an apt in West Village off of VRBO. I thought West Village was great. More of a neighborhood feel than a lot of areas.

Long Beach on Long Island. For one, you're on the beach on the Atlantic Ocean, and you're only a 56 minute train ride on the LIRR from Penn Station (which is in the basement of Madison Square Garden and about a 15 min walk to times square).
