I'm setting one up with a friend of mine in Washington. Neither of us have done this before. What do I need to know? How to ship, and with whom? Give me a rundown on procedure.

use more packaging material than you think you need, or go buy some Styrofoam molded bottle shipping boxes.
use a trash bag or 2 to line the box if you are not using a shipper.

I typically use UPS but receive several from Fed Ex

don't tell them it's beer

I always use FedEx home delivery. I use a shite ton of bubble wrap and tape. I do 2 layers of bubble wrap on the bottom, wrap each bottle completely in bubble wrap, line the side with crumbled up paper grocery bags or more bubble wrap, then pack the top of the bottles with more until the top closes and tapes without being able to push it down into the box. Have yet to have any breakage on any of my shipments and have never had a box held up by FedEx.

yeah if you order from Letspour or France44 save those boxes + inserts and use for future shipping.

for sure. If they do ask I just tell them it's bbq sauce or something.

I just go to UPS online now and create the shipment, then drop the box off at the UPS facility. They don't ask anything that way.

Didn't really read the other responses, but seeing the posters, I know they are saying the same thing I'm about to.

Use a strong box. Either one from a beer shipping site or amazon.
Bubble wrap everything. then do it again. They can never be too wrapped. If you have some kind of bottle holder, like one from a France44 or whatnot, use that too. You want as little movement as possible.
Fill empty space with news papers, paper towels, tp, foam, packing peanuts, or whatever takes up space and prevents bottles from moving around.
place everything in 1 or 2 trash bags.
Put in box
Tape up box very securely.
Get a UPS or FedEx online account and create labels online.
Drop off at facility.
Pray to craft beers Gods.
Refresh the tracking page ever 15 seconds until package is delivered.
Profit

I always put 1 lb in the weight section

I have no idea if this affects the cost, but I feel like I'm cheating the system while doing it, and it me feels bad in a good way

This. When in doubt, bubble wrap.

Unwrapping a whole sheet of bubble wrap (shite is like 2 bucks) around a beer>>>>>>> losing a bottle.

Not sure if this had been covered, but I try to have a back up plan in case a bottle breaks to prevent leakage. That may mean putting each bottle in a zip lock container, wrapping the entire assembly in a garbage bag or two, or both.

You don't wanna lose an entire box because one bottle broke and the box starts leaking and drawing suspicion. I usually don't worry about this if I am using a styrofoam shipper though.

I noticed

also, consider using rubber bands instead of tape to make it easier to reuse the bubble wrap

While we are talking BXN. I'm about to host a BXN party at my home and maybe a location in Nola or Br. Hell maybe LC.
It's a one way BXN. Think of it as a garage sale of craft beer.
I have too much
