3 words: Small Town America

When small town America shows up to soccer games like they do football, basketball, and baseball games...then perhaps there is hope on the horizon.

Until then, most of us will continue to root for the USA every four years during the World Cup and after the WC hype dies down, we'll go back to not caring about soccer and anxiously twiddling our fingers waiting for football and basketball season to begin.

Most of the nation wasn't rooting for our soccer team because we enjoy soccer...we were rooting for the United States.

I don't think small town America has anything to do with soccer or most sports.

I don't think its limited to small towns. I think the vast majority of people only watch to root for the US while the WC is going on.

People keep saying this. But I'm still not sure why it matters.

So I'm wrong, right?

If I'm so wrong, why do most small towns (population less than $5,000) not even offer soccer as a sporting option?

We had football, basketball, track & field, and baseball. All other small towns of similar size spread out thru the state offered the same thing. If you wanted to play soccer, you would have to travel to a larger city nearly 1.5 hours away.

If you liked soccer in my town, you were stereotyped by adults.

The football coaches used soccer to insult a player who wasn't performing at 100 percent. In their eyes, there was nothing worse than soccer. That sport was for girls.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

If America is to embrace soccer, it needs to happen in small town America too.

END OF THREAD

Soccer is broken in this country and always has been. We don't have the quality of coaches or training in the superior style of play that the Euros and S. Americans have.

Tim Howard was awesome yesterday, but it was a testament to how far behind we are. He was absolutely peppered due to mistakes and inferior talent in the field. That was a route to most educated soccer fans.

I think the argument is people will watch anything with America plastered on it. Professional curling hasn't exactly taken off.

What does this mean?

So you grew up in a shithole town where the entire population didn't have more than $5000, everyone was prejudiced and ignorant and you're essentially trying to brag about it?

That's awesome.

If a town doesn't have at least $5,000 between all the residents, soccer should be the least of their worries.

I have yet to see anyone deny most Americans watch the WC because the USA was in it. I just don't get how it's an "argument" or what it's an argument against, exactly.

we don't need small town america to give a frick. like i said last night, just focusing on large metro populations with immigrant populations will give us a "state" of a large western european nation

that's just LA, Houston, Miami, and Boston. it's about 50M people metro, min
