Belgium v. US

Shots (on goal): 38 (27)

Possession: 47%

I think it's THE most overrated stat. Most "possession" comes from knocking the ball around the back 4

As a stat, yes.

I would still rather us hold the ball better than we did though.

The best stat (which is sometimes used) is breaking down the field into halves (or thirds) and seeing how often the ball is in each part.

I'm not claiming this stat is wrong, but I am confused. Howard set a record with 16 saves. So either 11 shots hit the frame (which seems like way more than I remember), or they are pretty much including any blocked shot as on frame.

And come to think of it, I thought shots that hit the bar were off target.

If a shot is heading for goal but hits a player, it counts as on target, I think.

It's not an overrated stat once you look at it with the shots taken and shots on goal. That's the point.

So its an overated stat unless you look at other stats.
i think thats broski's point: possession numbers mean shite but rather the shot totals.

I also agree that time in which thirds are a more telling signs than possession

Possession is extremely important. It doesn't guarantee a result, but it certainly goes a long way in delivering one.

No, possession is very important. It's not an overrated stat at all, even alone.

Pretty much. If you can't keep possession, you are going to concede. Just a matter of time.

I disagree and i think this is one reason we have seen the decline of the spainish Tiki taki style of soccer.

The soccer world was obsessed with possession from about 2009-2013. Like all things, teams learned how to defend it. Now teams don't have a problem with playing rigid defense and playing counter attack

Stats are overrated in a single game scenario - all you need to do is watch the games to determine who deserved to win.

Belgium was clearly better. Wondo could've stolen it but shite happens.
