Will we ever stray away from the defend and counter?

This World Cup will go down as the 2nd most successful showing in our history (argument that getting out of the group of death is better than our quarterfinal run in 2002). Jurgen deserves a shite ton of credit for this team, he brought this team in and got out the absolute best in them.

THIS IS NOT A THREAD HATING ON JK. We are in good hands with him.

That said, our tactics in this World Cup were not that much different that what it was in 2010. The difference was that our player pool this time around was abundantly more talented.

Yeah, when we play in the Gold Cup and WCQ, we can play beautiful soccer because we are the most talented team in our confederation. I'm just wondering how far off are we from developing players that are ready to actively take on players, regardless if it is Jamaica or Germany as our opposition.

2018 is still a ways away, but the young up and comers we have mixed with vets (Bradley, Jozy, Fab), I think we will take a huge jump, player quality wise. Maybe that's when it finally turns.

I guess when we get better midfield and wing play we can.

We are missing that number 7, 8, or 10 that can control the flow of the game.

i think we could if our mid field would do a better job of maintaining possession.

Ballack just said it on WC tonight - we need more dynamic midfielders.

this. there has to be better technical play and buildup for us to stray. but imagine this teams athletic ability and conditioning with better touch and technical ability. would be a great team.

What brilliant insight Ballack.

Of course we need more dynamic midfielders.

frick, it makes me SICK watching the first touch of our midfield compared to other (round of 16) squads.

Having our linchpin in the midfield conciede and play in the MLS was laughable. Love or hate Jurgen, he was dead on about having the spine of our national team decide to play in the MLS.

UGH<<<

Yes. But he had the chance to make more money. Tough to pass up.

We need a better midfield who can hold the ball and make easy passes.

Every pass we take is so rushed and awkward looking

Well, he's right. It's our biggest weakness - why are you mad?

I fricking said it too, wanna fight about it?

It's the truth, so who cares?

Better midfield = more control = more possession = more chances for us /less for the opponent

Belgium (and Germany to some extent) were brilliant at turning defensive possessions into offensive opportunities. Their midfields excelled at taking a pass from the back four and quickly moving it on to a winger or forward. It was all one/two-touch ball and it was beautiful (and frustrating) to watch. The most glaring difference to me was that ability in transition to connect defense and a push forward.

We always seem hurried to throw a long ball forward and never are able to settle in the final third and dissect a defense.
