I need suggestions on where to go on a vacation in Colorado. We enjoy seeing the sights but mostly enjoy staying in a rustic/ lodge type place. We're in our 50's so some activities are limited -long hiking trips, etc. I d love to feel some cooler weather

Be honest. You don't care where you stay. You just wanna go and get Rocky Mountain High.

I wouldn't say Telluride is very rustic.

A cabin in Estes Park is great. About 90 northwest of Denver and is right at the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, so hiking is very easy.
Plus if you get tired of walking, drive Trail Ridge Road through the park. Highest paved road in US. Beautiful scenary.

So you'd fly to Denver and drive to Estes Park?

Can't go wrong with:
Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park
Aspen and Crested Butte
Telluride
Denver/Boulder
Never been to Durango so can't really comment on that

Dittos on Estes Park / RMNP
Alpine Trail Ridge Inn is pretty basic, but prime location just outside RMNP. If you want a little fancier, the Stanley Hotel is a classic.
All levels of hiking in the Park; definitely drive over Trail Ridge Road and Fall River Road. We went in July a few years ago and there was still snow on some of the upper trails.
Boulder is a good stop to or from Denver; the little town of Lyons is good to explore IF they're not still digging out from the floods.
(Come to think of it, you might want to check ahead to see if any of the places you're considering are still having issues from the flood damage or fires.)
