Mark Geiger probably should have red carded France's Matuidi

At first I thought a yellow was appropriate, and maybe to Geiger it looked that way as the foul happened, but looking at slow-mo replays and now the reports that he'll be out for months with a broken tibia and fibula, I think Geiger messed up.

As unfortunate as it is, I still think it's only a yellow..

This shouldn't be a factor as to which card to issue.

Matuidi was lucky - judging by his reaction I think he expected a red.

Tough for dude from Nigeria but He just lunged in. Yellow definitely appropriate. Red would not have been too harsh but I don't think that looked like a for sure red card play. Maybe if he would have slid in.

This was a straight red card earlier in the tournament. The player (Defour) did not even argue the decision.

Any time a player spikes another player with a clumsy challenge, I would consider a red card appropriate.

Matuidi should've been sent off, IMO, but it wasn't egregious.

Defour jumped in with both feet. I don't think that should be a red but refs usually do.

I don't always agree with this statement. I consider the Belgium card more appropriate time to red card than the France card. Not totally sure why (maybe its subconcious homerism) but it just passes the red card eye test more for me

Granted i would have been fine with a yellow for the Uruguay CR Red card

Both tackles produces the same result. For me, the injured Nigerian confirms what should have been a red. I know that didn't matter at the time of the tackle, but it does validate my opinion from my personal viewpoint.

To each his own, I can see why some would favor a yellow. A matter of personal preference.

Think red would have been appropriate in both situations as well.

I don't know which one i would have given if i had seen it live and its hard for me to say now.

I think it would have been a clear yellow, based on the lateness of it, if it hadn't been studs directly to the planted leg. The fact that it was late, studs up, and caused so much damage makes me think red would have been appropriate, but I can understand yellow being given as well.

The studs up part is what makes it red to me. I don't think it was malicious though, so that may be why Geiger only gave yellow. I would bet that when he carded Matuidi, he told him that any future fouls would be a second yellow.

Yellow was the correct call IMO. He was going for the ball but was just a little late. The Belgium player stomped him way after the ball was gone

Red all day.

Amongst many bad calls he made.

Agreed. It looked like a yellow to me as well.
