I know it’s the OT where everyone is strong, fast, and sexy but I read a lot of the fitness/running threads where tons of people claim to run upwards of 40 miles a week. I have running background but even in my competitive running days 40+ miles was a heavy week.

How are people who claim to run 40-50 or more miles/week: 1) not in great shape, I mean 6 pack/ripped, and 2) not really fast. Even in my late 30s if I ever got back to running 35-40 miles a week after a year I would be running low 40 minute 10K’s again easy. Are they not running hard enough, not occasionally interval training and mixing in track/speed work?

I run around 35-40 miles a week, I did 6 this morning, 10 yesterday.

its good to mix it up. if you just run at a snails pace for 5 miles then your heart rate never really gets that high.

I do 2 minutes on a treadmill at a certain speed and incline and then mix it up every 2 minutes. that's what keeps the heart rate up

also doing sprints is great, running stairs, and doing high intensity

If you are training for a marathon, you have a few 40+ mile weeks.

Right now I'm at about 12-14 miles a week. Once it cools down I'll steadily bump that back up as training increases. I'm a wuss and don't do well in the heat.

for any serious runner, 40 miles is not that hard during a week

when I was a "serious" runner, I averaged 40-50 per week easily

tempo runs = 6-8 miles (3 days/week)
sprints = 2-3 miles (1 per week)
long run = 14-20 miles (1 per week)

and that is with 2 days off

my big weeks were around 60-70 miles

I can elaborate on what I do for cycling. I do build phases that lead into recovery phases. 3-4 week builds entail 12-15hr weeks of cycling. Hard interval training during the week. Usually 2hr workouts. The weekend usually includes 6-10hrs of either exhaustive training rides or focused workouts. That leads up to a recovery phase; which I maybe touch the bike for four hours that week. Break it down to build it up. Gotta allow the body to recover though.

I'm the opposite. I enjoy running, hate biking.

This right here looks similar to my fall schedule leading up to marathon season. Plenty of people run 40 miles/week. Just because they run that much doesn't mean they run it fast.

I'm sure when you were doing those miles you were competitive and fast, and also looked like a runner. Unless someone has a metabolic problem or eats and drinks like a hog you are going be phenomenal shape running that much.

It seems every other runners in some threads claim that type of mileage, some of that seems hard to believe.

I think 25-30 miles is plenty for basic cardio and maintaining weight

well this is the internet, so I'm sure some people do over exaggerate their mileage but we do have some pretty legit runners on this board

Hijack

CAD, what's your method for training for a long ride? Like a century?

I have a few months, and am trying to figure it out.

Im 57, and I am up to 6 mi. a week. Only run 3 times, usually mon, wed, fri. I didn't run fri, golf trny., beer drinking, so I ran sat. I need to get some cardio in on the off days and have a mountain bike to do so with. My knees aren't the best, but have no real pain while running, but wanna give em a brake. How many miles would I have to ride to equal 2 miles of jogging? And I know its about the getting the heart beat up, and my runs arent at snails pace, and have several hills on my route. And I hope to up to 9 miles a week running. Just started back a month or so ago, running. Thanks In Advance gurus of health.
