Did you get another one? I know the majority do, but is this always the right thing - I feel weird around others' dogs now. I miss my Ollie who died in an accident. If I can't feel comfortable around others, should I just not get a new one - or will it help? No one can replace my Ollie, but which will ease the void better?

And if I was to get a new one, I hear to avoid getting the same kind...I had a weimeranor. I love the short-haired feature. Thoughts on that?

I view dogs as tools for the most part. If a dog passes away, I replace it.

Waited a week and then realized my heart wasn't whole.

Get another dog.

Just get another one, but don't expect it to be the same as your last dog.

Kinda like you know when it's time to put your dog down, you know when it's time to take the plunge and get a new one in your life.

Go get a puppy(try and find a rescue dog). You're not replacing... you're continuing. You can grieve and be happy at the same time. Dog people are dog people and that doesn't change because our best friend has passed.

My dogs passed recently pretty close together in time and I refuse to get new dogs. They can't be replaced and I can't even think about loving new dogs any time soon. Would rather avoid the pain/attachments. It's not fair that they don't live as long as us.

Years later, yes. I've heard it's often helpful to get another dog soon but I couldn't do it.

Tools? For what?

Whatever you need a dog for, I guess. Hunting, protection, whatever.

I know who the tool is, and it ain't the dog...

My last dog killed my new puppy, so I had to have him put down. Wasn't really wanting another dog but my girlfriend at the time got me a rat terrier. I initially wanted to give him away and say the hell with dogs, but he's grown on me. Plus he's too little to tear up my yard, so that's a plus.

Someone else said, but you'll know when it's the right time. You'll get another one, that one to will likely pre-decease you, you'll hurt again, but have the memories of two (or more) to think about.

Losing a dog is tough. The pain is real. Realer for some than others. You sound like a real dog person. Sorry for your loss.

We have lost three - 1st one got another dog about 5 months later, 2nd one about 4 years later, 3rd one about one month later. We still miss the other dogs but I think its a little easier with another dog. On a totally different note you remember how much work a dog can be - so a little break is worth it - but having one is so much fun.

He is not far off though. That's pretty much why the dog was created by us. We domesticated it to do certain jobs it still does today. It's still very much viewed as sort of a tool by a lot of individuals and not family pets. Cop dogs, hunting dogs, herding dogs may get treated a bit differently than good ole Fido.
