Udonis Haslem has opted out of his contract and will become a free agent.

If he's opting out, then you know Wade and Bosh aren't far behind. Wouldn't surpise me if Lebron doesn't even go on a FA visit.

What is opting out exactly?

didn't they already opt out or was that just rumors?

Pat Riley must have thrown a ton of money under the table at him for him to opt out. No way Haslem makes more than what he stood to make.

Just a rumor. They haven't done it yet, but I'm sure it's coming soon.

if they have a player option in their contract the player can "opt" out of their contract and become a FA or re-sign a new contract with their current team

Haslem had a player option for 4.6 mil this coming season. He declined his player option thus making him a un restricted free agent. Heat will offer him a long term deal, so they can save money this year.

Rumors. I think they will though. Haslem opting out definitely means Miami is taking the cuts they need to win.

LeBron
Wade
Bosh
Haslem
Cole
Allen
Napier

That's what it looks like now. I say Allen because he wants to stay with LeBron and would probably take the minimum to do so. If Haslem is opting out, it's because Riley/the Big Three promised he'd get resigned.

They clearly have a plan and must have a few targets that they're confident in signing.

ETA: I know very little about NBA contract rules other than Options, Bird Rights, and of course salary caps. But just for fun, I'm gonna take a swing at what the players I listed above will make this upcoming season.

The Salary Cap: $63.2m

LeBron: I think he signs something like a 5yr/$80m deal, so that's $16m a year.

Wade: I think he signs something like a 5yr/$60m deal, so that's $12m a year.

Bosh: I think he signs something like a 5yr/$70m deal, so that's $14m a year.

Haslem: He was due $4.6m this upcoming season if he had taken the option, so I think they stretch that out to 4 year deal worth $5m, which is $1.25m a year.

Cole: He will make just over $2m.

Allen: I have no idea, so I'll just say a 1 year deal worth like, $1.5m

Napier: Apparently it'll be something like $1.25m a year.

Total: $48m

They'd have roughly $15m in cap space.

So the Heat should say thanks and let him sign with literally anyone else.

Haslem, Bosh, Wade all have same representation. So, yes, plans are in concert. Freeing up money for Riley to work.

Pretty sure he has a handshake agreement on a 2-3 yr deal with Miami for him to opt out of 4.6 mil. In other words, he's not going anywhere.

they may have promised they'd re-sign him for another run at a title.

or maybe he wasn't happy with his playing time and would rather play more than earn that much.

Nah the heat are probably gonna throw him something like 3 years $7-8 million.

Riley is the Don. He is the big pimp that pulls all the strings. He has to be the best in the game at this. He called out the players inthat press conference, that takes some balls, but the players believe in Riles and his word.

They are doing what Riles needs them to do, and it will be up to him to deliver. And his track record is pretty good in doing so.

What free agents are actually in play to join Miami besides Carmelo? Don't they need a 5 more than anything?

sure he can.

They can offer him 3 years $9 mil or so. If h takes his team option there's no guarantee he'll recoup that $4.5 mil in another deal after next season.

Riley is still very good at manipulating the CBA but I think Morey is the best going right now. He has the 501 page 2011 CBA practically memorized.

Which sucks because I fricking hate the Rockets.
