Before the 1911: The Colt 1905

The direct predecessor to the 1911 model was the Colt 1905. Chambered in .45 ACP with a 5" barrel, around 6000 pieces were made with 100-200 being experimental models with features that were incorporated in the 1911 design.
From Colt's ad copy of the time:
'In the new Model, caliber .45, we offer a weapon of tremendous effectiveness...Loaded with smokeless powder only, the cartridge has a full metal cased bullet, giving a velocity of 900 ft. per second...'

Is that a single action w no safety? 1905 beat Glock on the "safe action pistol". Your finger is the true only safety on that pistol

I'd have one. Here is my 1903.

I may have told this story on here already but.
Pops was buying and selling antiques for a while. He ended up with an old roll top letter desk. Will cleaning it up, we found a secret compartment. In the secret compartment we found an calcasieu marine bank bag. In the bag was a near mint Colt 1908. (.380)
I ran the sn's on colt's site. It was assembled in 1920. It's no .45 obviously but still a badass find.

Interesting. Was it being used in the armed forces?
