Casual soccer fan but no where near a die hard that gets the ins and outs. Obviously a lot can happen between now and 2018, but if you had to guess who is currently playing that won't be on the team in 2018 because of age or simply being passed up by others, who would that be? Also, if you had to throw some names out there on who might compete to replace those guys, who would that be?

I know Howard is getting up there in age, but does his position make it possible he'll still be around in 2018?

Green and Brooks are probably a pretty good bet. Bradley, Altidore, Johannsson, Boyd, Johnson, Yedlin, Gonzalez, Besler, Chandler, and Cameron will probably be there too. We have a pretty solid, and relatively young, core. I think Guzan replaces Howard after this WC, but who knows. Howard seems to wax and wane on whether or not he'll play at the 2018 WC.

Its really hard to guess. Some linked a thread like this to a 2010 discussion of the 2014 WC and it was fairly comical but
you would have to assume Guzan (and maybe howard if he really wants it).
Fab Johnson, Cameron I think will be back.
DMB gone (I assume but frick he is still only getting better )
MB and KB will be back. JJ gone.
Dempsey will be back. or be a supersub type player. (as long as he doesnt go the LD route).
Yedlin shows promise but could possibly flame out.
hopefully AJ, Green, Chandler, all improve and will be back
really hard to say about the others imo
Boyd hopefully improves and can take a spot. no idea really about the rest.

Edited: forgot Jozy, Im sure he will be back.

On a related note, I think it will be a telling sign of our improvement as a soccer country if we can start having a more stable lineup year in and year out. Maybe predictable is a better term than stable

Thanks. Sounds like a solid core/group to build off of with what would likely return.

On another note, it's good to see the TV ratings so high. Also, noticed that attendance here in the states for MLS actually is larger than average attendance in the NBA and NHL. I think if shown as a percentage of capacity it is lower than the other 2, but as far as raw numbers of people going, it's outdrawing both of them.

Soccer is s sport I would love to see and keep waiting to take off.

How can you say 32 year old Beckerman will be back while 32 year old Jermaine Jones wont?

Seems like they will both not be options come 2018

99% won't be there: Wondolowski, Jones, Beckerman, Beasley, Rimando, Davis

Will be old but will probably be their call: Howard and Dempsey

Will be over 30 in 2018 so it depends on how healthy they stay but decent chance they're there in 2018: Cameron, Zusi, Bedoya

Over 30 in 2018 but integral leaders and players so extremely good chance they make it: Johnson, Bradley, Besler, Guzan

Young Players who are pretty much locks: Altidore, Johansenn, Gonzalez, Diskurud

Young talents who look good but have to develop to make 2018: Green, Brooks, Chandler, Yedlin

Its getting there.

I dont think we will ever have an MLS team to call our own in St Louis Reedus. That makes me sad.

I'll throw out two longshots who could be 2018's Yedlin, Green, etc.

Emerson Hyndman

Rubio Rubin(really excited to see what he does with Utrecht)

You're probably right, but I haven't given up hope.

How old is Dempsey right now? This could be his last World Cup.

That's what I thought. I hope he has one more in him even as a sub, and this is coming from someone who thinks Dempsey is overrated.

I pray to sweet God above Shawn Parker chooses us over Germany and Gedion gets his citizenship. Those two would definitely be on the 23.
