50 years ago this week, civil rights workers James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were assassinated in Philadelphia, MS simply for registering Black folks to vote. These three brave men were immortalized in the movie "Mississippi Burning". To me, this week has been surreal considering the fact that Black folks played such an important role in Cochran-McDaniels runoff election which has caused so much controversy in the Republican party 50 years after the assassinations (6/21/64) and LBJ signed the CRA into law (7/02/64). Keep in mind that before the Civil Rights Movement, most Black folks were Republicans. Also keep in mind that political pundits at the time predicted that the Democratic party would lose the South for 50 years. And now 50 years later, Black Mississippians have returned to the party of their grandparents to stop McDaniels who they see as a modern-day Dixiecrat. Anyway, here are the audio clips of the conversations between some of the major players in the events that took place 50 years ago this week.

LBJ discusses the missing civil workers and the KKK with Special Council Lee White - 062314

LBJ briefs Speaker of the House John McCormack on his efforts to infiltrate the KKK with undercover FBI - 062314

Senator James Eastland tries to convince LBJ that there were no assassinations because there's no KKK in Mississippi and Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner are perpetrating a hoax - 062364

J Edgar Hoover informs LBJ that the burned out car of the civil rights workers has been found - 062364

LBJ and Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach discuss ways to stop the KKK - 062364

J Edgar Hoover updates LBJ on the progress of the search for the civil rights workers - 062364

J Edgar Hoover discusses the investigation with Attorney General Nicholas Katzenback and LBJ - 062664

I tried starting a thread about this two days ago. Nobody was interested. Pity.

Freedom Summer 1964 was 50 years ago this year

This should be a good thread, Track. If the American Struggle for Civil Rights were a battle in any number of wars, Mississippi would have been as important a battleground as any in US history.

This country has come too far to send petit demagogues like McDaniels back to the upper halls of power.

Unless track is a white girl between 22 and 38, he's SOL.

I'm pretty sure he's SOL.

McDaniels looks , acts, and sounds like an evangelistic carpet salesman...no fan here. I wouldn't trust that fricker as far as I could throw him.

But yet a buffoon like Sheila Jackson Lee can be elected? What's your criteria?

You can probably start with her not being a Senator and work your way up to clever from there.

Congress? Elected to a national position of power? Congress part of the halls of power in your book, chief? Huh?

A Senator represents a whole state. A Rep represents a select group of gerrymandered jackasses who pull a lever for whichever party their district elects every two years.

Is that really your answer to what a "hall of power" is ? So a frick up like Sheila is good ...she's acceptable? That your criteria...if they are going to the Senate, must be good...if going to the a House, even shite for brains will do?

I'm pretty sure she's retarded, but that has shot to do with a scumbag like McDaniels aspiring to take a seat in the Senate. If you hate what's her face from a district in California that I'm confident you'll have to google, be my guest. But take some time to acquaint yourself with the other retards and frickups in the House. There is no shortage.

Do you not see the irony of bragging about Thad scaring black people into voting for him in a civil rights thread?
