Is there an app that allows you to edit a Word document on your smartphone?

there are also multiple apps for google drive that allow you to do this.
quickoffice also works on iphones, not sure about android.

Will the app Korkstand suggested sync with my Google Drive on my phone? That would be ideal.

quickoffice does on my ipad. i find editing word docs on a phone to be tedious.

If you prefer Google Drive then you should probably use QuickOffice as others suggested.

You'll have to pay a monthly fee I'm pretty sure on Microsoft Mobile though

Syncs with one drive and one note, basically what the enterprise world uses.
