I bought this 17 boston whaler with a 96 40 hp Johnson seahorse last year. I have had one uneventful trip so far. I have had carbs rebuilt and replaced the stattor and the power bac replaced all plugs, changed fluid in lower unit etc and put new tanks and fuel lines on. Always a bear to get cracked and running, it better now.

Here is the latest saga, cranked it up at home on new gas with seafoam etc. Cranked fine let it run for about ten minutes and took it to Fowl river. Launched fine but as ways idle is to low and died as I back it out but ok after that. Then it would only run at about 1000-1500 rpm (By hearing) all day not enough to plane out etc. In idle position it reves up great but when u switch to gear it throttles down and dies or stays basically at idle speed. Prop spins fine, and it goes into gear but no power just hits hard idle at full throttle.

Any of you backyard mechanics etc have any idea what is going on here?

Does the engine still have the VRO oil system installed. If it does it will not let you go over 2000 rpm if there is no oil in the tank or bad oil level switch.

No but that does raise a good point. I did hear a damn oil alarm when I started it. It went off for about ten seconds then I ignored it.

I bet that is it. where is that damn switch.

I have that same engine on a 15 ft whaler. I eventually just started mixing my own and said to hell with it.

Had the same exact problem.

They were supposed to disconnect it when I bought the damn thing. I am beginning to think they didnt fully disconnect it all, or equally likely since they mis-wired the power pack the kid reconnected some of it at that time.

Did that fix your problem?

The main thing going on may be that you have a 20 year old motor.

Do you have any way of knowing how many hours are on that engine? Or what kinds of fuel//lubricants have been run through it ??

I know new engines are expensive. But repetitive trips that are ruined by a malfunctioning engine = Royal PITA.

I has about 20 hours on it last ten years, which is why I bought it, plus I love Seahorse motors. (I have had three and were all about impossible to kill)

Many Thanks for the tip. I think that was freaking it, they didn't completely disconnect the damn oil pump. The you tube video really helped. I think that is what has been causing 90% of my damn problems.

Ok, anybody have a motor just didn't like you. I am a decent guy, i but it good gas and sea foam and change plugs and fluids it ever year. I dont ask for much just a few uneventful trips a year.

I lent my boat to my buddy for use in Destin. He said it ran great. I get here and first trip out it is doing the same damn thing. It will not run about rough idle when in gear. Seems to run better with boat motor trimmed high for some reason.

The external oil pump reserviour etc had been disconnected as advised but now a month later is doing the same damn thing. Any ideas? Something else still sending signals? It is sitting in the damn harbor as since you have to run in idle for 5 miles around here i didn't realize it until after I launched.
